VHS : Stuart Saves His Family
There are about ten laughs in this film by smarmfart Al Franken. Worth seeing once.

But Franken's brilliant creation is Stuart himself.

Full disclosure: I loath Franken's politics and most of his other humour, but this work is a brilliant exception.

Stuart Saves his family is an overlong extension of a SNL skit about "Stuart" the over twelve-stepped psychological casualty of our continuously self-indulgent selves. Rather than overcome his traumas, Stuart nurses them like a bacteriological growth in an inner Petri dish. He stumbles through a series of activities where his therapiezed world view provides conflict with others functioning normally (operating thetans), and abnormally (everyone in his family). I never really got the works of LRH, but his paranoia ... Read More

VHS : As Good As It Gets
As Good As It Gets starring Jack Nicholson is the worst movie ever to win an Oscar for best picture. I hate this movie in every way possible, Helen Hunt is horrible in this, can't believe she won an Oscar as well. Greg Kinnear is the only saving grace here and even Old Jack looks uninspired. This film is not funny or touching, just plain unbearable.

If only this was on DVD, but we can't have everything. Great story and better than fair acting. When it comes out on DVD I'll be buying it again, if only for the scenery.

THIS MOVIE, DISAPPOINTED TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, BECAUSE OF THE CHANGES MADE BY THE CENSORS. THE FILM DOES CONVEY THE ACTUAL PERSONALITY OF THIS POSSIBLY GREATEST OF ALL AMERICAN PLAYWRIGHTS. A REAL INSIGHT INTO THE INNER PSYCHE OF MR. WILLIAMS, OFTEN REFERRED TO AS A "POET OF THE EMOTIONS".

THE CHARACTER OF ALEXANDRA DE LAGO MIRRORED THE PERSONALITY OF MR. WILLIAMS, IN THAT HE HAD EXPERIENCED A BRILLIANT CAREER, AND WAS GETTING OLDER, AND SUFFERING MORE HEALTH PROBLEMS. THE CHANCE WAYNE CHARACTER PLAYED BY PAUL NEWMAN, ILLUSTRATES THE TYPE OF MAN MR. WILLIAMS WAS MOST EMOTIONALLY ATTRACTED TO IN LIFE. GERALDINE PAGE GIVES AN INTERESTING PERFORMANCE, BUT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A MUCH BETTER FILM, IF INDEED TALLULAH BANKHEAD COUD HAVE PLAYED THIS PART, ESPECIALLY WRITTEN FOR HER BY MR. WILLIAMS, AND ... It took me awhile to see this film. Most of the time it was out of print and unavailable. It isn't a film they show on Sunday afternoons when people are spending time at home. It goes deeper and more complicated than most people are able to fathom, especially when watching it in a casual manner on TV. Luckily, I found a old copy of a paperback I probably got at a garage sale years ago in my basement. The book is wonderful and I highly recommend it. The book also helps understand the way the movie is put together as they are essentially the same. A doctor who leaves his wife and children with no particular goal or reason becomes involved with a younger married woman who portrays herself as a carefree kook. She presents herself as a carefree version of a fling but immediately it becomes clear that casual ... Read More

The widely renowned Joseph Campbell expressed once that the religion has been written in poetic language, but has been read in prose.

If we bring this statement into the cinematographic lexicon, we might establish surprising parallelisms. "Rain people" is a crude and devastating portrait about losers along the way; it deals with the life and times of anonymous human beings, trapped in the web of the routine and existential hopeless, so typical in those times in which the state of things surmounted by far, the context of many people around the world.

A desperate and bored house wife,(who discovers is pregnant)decides to make a crucial decision, so she leaves her home and flees with her car. But in the road she will pick up a retarded ex football star who has a metal plate in his head (a ... Read More

I first saw this movie when I was 11 and didn't understand half of what I was seeing because so much was coded or unsaid. This wonderful film is based on Mary McCarthy's book about 8 Vassar grads as they went forth, in the Depression Era, to make their contributions to emergent America and realize the potential of their educations.

This was the first movie I ever saw that discussed sexuality, marriage, and manners among the upper-middle class. This was the first film that used the words Lesbo and Sapphic. Other firsts were depictions of the mentally ill, adultery, female alcoholism, open marriage, domestic violence, psychoanalysis, pregnancy, childbearing and rearing, and childlessness within the historical context of the 1930s.

Somewhat a soap opera, the ensemble cast is excellent, the ... Read More
