VHS : My Neighbor Totoro
I remember watching this movie when it frist came out and simply being at awe with it. No bad guys ... little girls and fuzzy monsters ... come one, how can that beat Akira? Well, it just does. It's been my favorite move for years and now it's my daughter's favorite movie too.

I think the thing that gets me the most is Myazaki's treatment of the parents. When the children tell them of ghosts and monsters, there's instant belief ... no pats on the head followed by "silly girls" ... the father plays along and encourages them with kindness and understanding ... awesome.

The artwork is not Disney and it's not Pixar or Dreamworks ... its just simply amazing and warm. makes you want to just jump into the movie and play along.

Yes, it's filler, but it's great filler. This story arc featuring Goku's stint in the afterlife following the Cell saga is a great transition (unlike the Garlic Jr. Saga. Blech). It's a welcome change of scenery, and a charming display of the weirdness and off-the-wall humor that is Akira Toriyama's hallmark. Some of the scenes in this arc are simply hilarious! And it's not full of that cheap style of character animation that made up the bulk of the Garlic Jr. Saga.

I've noticed a difference in FUNimation's handling of the show. The background music, though still redone, is nowhere near as jarring as it used to be, and even varies to fit the scenes now. The voice actors are only getting better and better, and it appears the producers are at least TRYING to stick to the original ... Read More

VHS : Dominion Tank Police Act 2
This anime is a very nice one that is pretty good for its time. The characters are easy to adapt to and some of the moments are very hilarious. The only thing I didnt really aprove of were the tanks. With a name like Tank Police, you'd expect there to be some really cool tank designs, but the action made up for it. The action is very intense and exciting. Seeing a tank jump on to the wing of a plane was so cool. I just wish U.S. Manga would put more thought into the subtitles. The subtitles were so small and hard to read. That aside, I really like this title and I will propably buy the DVD.

VHS : Dragon Ball Z - Immortals (Vol. 6)(Episodes 17-19)
Picking up from Doom (Vol. 5), Immortals continues the Saiyan Saga with a vengeance. The Z force is stalling for time, hoping that Goku will arrive soon to aid in the fight against Vegeta and Nappa. In a bid for time, they agree to fight one-on-one with the Saiyan's Saibamen - little green trolls that are as strong as Goku's late brother Radditz. The relative ease with which the Z fighters are able to combat the Saibamen skillfully illustrates how much the fighters have learned in the past year of training. However, the Saibamen fight dishonorably and manage to mortally wound one member of the Z force and kill a second. A third member of the Z force sacrifices his own life in a desperate bid to protect his friends from the vicious Nappa, but tragically the sacrifice is in vain.

Relying on word of mouth popularity, I purchased this video back in 1992. I was a bit nervous because at the time, the publisher(Animeigo) was still releasing their videos at very high prices. I wasn't disappointed. It was what made me a fan of Rumiko Takahashi cartoons and comics. I have also read the english translation of the comics and I think that this video is every bit as good as Takahashi's origional work. Now, when you start purchasing videos about bikini clad aliens that mildly resemble Japanese folk villians, people will think you are crazy. However, I can assure you that the stories are as intelegent as completely off-the-wall humor can get. If your video collection contains Mr. Bean and Betty Boop. . . well then, Have I got a video for you!

VHS : Abashiri Family
The Abashiri family - one of the most notorious criminal gangs ever. Papa Abashiri decides that it's about time his little girl is raised more appropriately -- as a young lady, and not as a deadly gang member. Papa then decides to send his dear daughter Kikunosuke to an elite boarding school. The problem is, this school doesn't have any intention of graduating their students. Crazed faculty members with homicidal and perverted tendencies, violent and unfriendly classmates... all of them welcome Kikunosuke to her new home. Pretty soon, it's an all-out teachers vs. students war in school. Will she be able to finish school before school finishes her?

The Abashiri Family is a very violent anime. There is a lot of fighting and bloodshed, yet TAF tries to treat these situations lightly. Keyword: tries. ... Read More

I bought this knowing that the story would be different, and it was! I liked it, but I'll have to try listening to it in Japanese. Alita (Gally, in this OVA), has SUCH an irritating voice in english. She's too girly compared to the manga. There should have been more action, but what was there was pretty good.

Hugo was a jerk, not the out of reach tease he was in the manga.

I have to say there were way too many sex scenes! (Just two, but it was indecent!)

I enjoyed it, especially "Tears Sign" ("Tears of an Angel" in the manga).

If you choose between this and the manga though, get the manga. 5 million times better!
