VHS : Stepping Out
Liza Minelli is such a brilliantly expressive actor and dancer, that she can overcome any tired cliche that's thrown at her (starting with the title of this film), and this one has cliches that weren't even cliches in 1991. She's so great in every scene that the viewer forgets that the talents of Andrea Martin, for example, are wasted. Wasted. Shelley Winters gets a slightly better chance to show her skills, as the wizened, retired theatre exponent who nonetheless plays piano part-time for the troupe, almost *defiantly* lousy. (But at the big show, there she is in the orchestra pit!).
Yes, men are beasts throughout this early-era militant feminist flick. The only non-beast is the solitary xy-entity in the class, a sissified straight guy, badly acted and terrifically danced by Bill Irwin. ... Read More

Who, apart from some psychologists and health care providers even know who Richard Maurice Bucke is????

Well, thank God that there are some film directors that eschew big time glitz to bring a work of pure art and labour of love to the screen. BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS is the based-on-fact story of Maurice Bucke, whose enduring friendship with famed poet Walt Whitman influenced him greatly in the field of progressive health care. Bucke believed that humane contact and a normalization of routines in mental asylums was absolutely necessary to the rehabilitation and care of the unfortunate.Bucke is often recognized as "the father of occupational therapy". Bucke was an avid reader of poetry and read Whitman's banned (in Canada) LEAVES OF GRASS which lead him to meeting the famed ... Read More

Unlike the CD, "Beethoven Lives Upstairs,"--which was of superb quality--I was very disappointed in the DVD. I had hoped it would be exactly the story/conversations/music/etc. of the CD but simply put to live action. It was not! The character of Christoph was made much more whiny and disrespectful. The story was changed some from the CD. Conversations were different. Not nearly as much of Beethoven's music was heard. I would buy another story-CD in the Classical Kids series in a moment; I don't think I would ever buy another DVD in the series unless I could view it first.

VHS : Dead Husbands
Best things about this movie? Hands down, John Ritter, who has always been underrated as a comedian and actor, and his wife Amy Yasbeck, who plays his agent. You can see the chemistry between them here, and they play off each other very well for that reason. The plot is quite funny, about a relationship psychologist who sells tons of books about marital communications, yet his own spouse, who he hasn't a clue about, is in a sort of wives' mafia where other wives they don't know take turns murdering each others' husbands. Imagine Carter's surprise when he discovers he's on their list, and the cops think he's the major suspect!

Unfortunately, due to the fact that Carter's wife Alex is played by Nicolette Sheridan, the movie loses some charm, and it ends up being another typical movie that's ... Read More

If I'm not mistaken, this was a straight to video film. Despite that, I thought it was actually pretty good. Bonnie Bedelia plays a no nonsense judge that can't get no satisfaction. Billy Wirth plays the dark, handsome stranger that thrills and eventually chills her. Surprisingly, the love scenes left a lot to the imagination.....(which isn't often the case today) and they were still hot despite the fact that the characters were still clothed! Not a bad flick at all.

7.Pacific Heights starring: Luca Bercovici, Guy Boyd, Melanie Griffith, Jerry Hardin, Dorian Harewood

VHS : Pacific Heights
Pacific Heights is a story about obsession and violence. Michael Keaton has never been creepier than this movie, his performance was the highlight of his career. Matthew Modine and Melanie Griffith are good as well, they play a couple who become terrified of their new tentant. This film is oldie but goodie, don't watch it alone.

VHS : George's Island
I feel this film was missed by the population at large. It is an absolutely wonderful little film. I suppose it falls under the genre of "Family Film" although it is a bit gritty in places (head chopping ghost pirates, after all!) and filled with funny moments that might be lost on younger children (nothing profane or rude, just minute and hilarious). All of the performances are truly top-notch, notably the Grandfather, Ian Bannen, the Teacher, Sheila McCarthy, and the Social Worker, Maury Chaykin. The latter two form a comedic duo that is absolutely hysterical! Of course you have your thrilling moments with the ghost pirates, but the real heart of this gem is the tender bond between the sensitive boy, George and his salty, sometimes harsh, Grandfather. The children are not just set pieces; they are vital and fully ... Read More

VHS : Die Hard 2: Die Harder (Widescreen Edition)
I watched this DVD over several days while exercising. I would never do this with a movie I hadn't seen before, but with one, like this one, that I've seen several times, just listening while I'm staring at my knees doing crunches or at the floor doing push-ups is enough to refresh my memory... and to keep my mind off the self-torture.

Die Hard 2 is still fun and action-packed, and it still has Bruce Willis, but it follows the Law of Sequels (I just spent some 30 minutes trying to see if anyone's codified this, but all I could find was the quote from Scream 2 about body counts.) --more action and special effects, less believability.

It's Christmas again, and John McClane is again reuniting with his wife, and again terrorists get in the way. This time, it's at an airport, and the terrorists have ... Read More
