VHS : Coyote Waits
Years ago Robert Redford bought the screen rights to a bunch of Tony Hillerman mysteries. He's been the force behind one movie (The Dark Wind, 1991, with Lou Diamond Phillips and Fred Ward as Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn) and three television movies, all with Adam Beach as Chee and Wes Studi as Leaphorn (American Mystery! Special: Skinwalkers, 2002; Coyote Waits, 2003; and A Thief of Time, 2004). Redford has yet to get it right.

Coyote Waits is the best of the TV movies, but it suffers from the same conscientious flaws that mar the other three productions. It's best to remind ourselves just why Hillerman's mysteries are so good: They are complex yet believable; are set in what, for most Americans, is an exotic locale within a culture which is not well known; and the mysteries are superbly ... VHS : Five Million Years to Earth
"Quatermass and the Pit" is the most exciting science fiction/horror hybrid I've seen from Hammer Productions. The plot is intricate, exciting and thought provoking; it offers extremely unique theories of man's origin on earth.

Professor Quatermass (Andrew Keir of "Dracula: Prince of Darkness") is investigating what first appears to be an unexploded bomb found during the construction of a subway line. Upon further examination, he learns that it is an alien spacecraft that is over five million years old. The identity of its crewmembers is quite disturbing. Worse of all, the spacecraft appears to have a life of its own. Pandemonium breaks out in London as the spacecraft takes possession of men's bodies and souls, turning them into killing machines that can't be stopped.

VHS : Bless Me Father, Vol. 1-3, Box Set
This wonderful tape collection contains the first nine episodes of that wonderful show, Bless Me Father. The show was set in the 1950s, and stars veteran actor Arthur Lowe as Father Charles Clement Duddleswell, parish priest. Father Duddleswell is an irascible old fellow, and is used to getting his way. But, when he is given a newly minted curate (Daniel Abineri), he must take the young man by the hand and show him just how to be a parish priest.

This show is an excellent Britcom, one that is sure to please all lovers of good comedy. Yes, the show does feature a Catholic priest, and in this day and age you would expect the show to lampoon the Catholic Church. But, in fact the good fathers are presented as funny, but the show does not seem particularly disrespectful. Overall, I found this to be a ... Read More

VHS : Bless Me, Father - Collector's Set 2
Whether one is Catholic, Protestant, or neither, this 1951 setting at St. Jude's Parish is home to some of the best religious humour tempered with reverence. It is smart, unoffensive, and down right funny stuff. It makes one laugh at one's own irony, as well as that of others. Somehow it unwittingly beckons those who would be on the fence about religion to seek it. There's something comforting about the St. Jude Parish and their little church community. Great wisdom is a midst here, as well as the timeless depth of reverence to God within the framework of the Catholic Church. It's all accomplished in a setting with hilarious fallibility demonstrated by the parish priests as they interact with each other, the community, and their Protestant neighbors. One will find themselves surprised and tickled into constant belly ... Read More

I thought this was OK but have a few reservations about the actresses who played his wives. The woman who played Catherine of Aragon was not very believable and over-acted way too much when she screamed histrionically at being told of Henry's intention to divorce her. And the actors who played the German Cleves family (Duke and two daughters Anna and Amelia) had the most ridiculous accents, which only distracted from the drama. I doubt Ann of Cleves was as stupid as they portrayed her, but in this miniseries she comes across as almost mentally retarded.
