VHS : Postman
This is one of the most underrated movies of all time. The Postman is not just your average post-apocalyptic scenario. It is a deeply emotional and philosophical film about the power of hope. What I love about this movie is that it shows how something very simple-- mail-- can become a symbol for everything that makes us human and for everything that makes us American. Yes, its a little long, and yes, the ending requires a slight suspension of disbelief. But the movie is good enough that you wont notice the length, and moving enough that disbelief hardly even enters the mind. I love this film, and recommend it highly.

For gosh sakes, why is this out of print? This is one of the better coming of age films I have ever seen -- sweet, funny, poignant, with a bravura performance from Alec Baldwin as the damaged, working class Dad. Great soundtrack, as the film is set in the mid-70s, and some classic prep school fish-out-of-water scenes. And of course the head disciplinarian is a classic. Look also for a young Amy Smart as the lady of the young man's dreams, and you pretty much have a fine film that is begging to be re-released immediately.

VHS : Down to You
This film is not Oscar material - no best picture or best actor/actress nominations need apply. Yet Freddie Prinze Jr. and Julia Styles give commanding and poignant performances that portray young, innocent, enduring true love, making this a classy flick.

If you're looking for a romantic and light-hearted movie, get this. It's refreshing and it will make you smile.

This is one of the very best modern movies. Though it is a good deal more serious, it is certainly on par with such movies as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Punch-Drunk Love. The one problem I have is that IT HASN'T BEEN RELEASED ON DVD YET. How the suits could pass over such a stupendous work of art is beyond me, though not surprising. This movie will help you understand a certain illness better than you ever have (or even possibly ever could), and it will break your heart with its frank portrayal of a doomed and short-lived love affair. A movie you couldn't possibly forget, this will make your life deeper. Now we just NEED IT ON DVD!

VHS : Anywhere But Here
In some ways, this movie is a real masterpiece. One of its really strong merits is that it does not try to pretend that a single mother (Sarandon) and her daughter (Portman) are so perfect. It shows that people can be loving and endearing even though they aren't perfect.

Right away we see that there is tension between Sarandon (who really isn't through living for herself) and her daughter Portman who thinks a little more about what she does. Though she can be a brat sometimes. (One moment is when in a restaurant, she orders more than she knows her mother can afford.)

Throughout the story, we are inclined to think that Sarandon should not have had a child. One tragic flaw is that when one of them is ready to open up, the other isn't. Sometime Sarandon isn't ready, and sometimes Portman ... Read More

VHS : Cooler (2003)
Maria Bello is 1 of the sexiest & most interesting actresses around. She's not a superstar, but consistently delivers the goods in films not worthy of her talents. Perhaps the only vehicle I've ever seen that did her talents justice is the cult tv series Nowhere Man- where she appeared in an episode as the lead character's love interest. In The Cooler, she portrays Natalie Belisario- a Vegas cocktail waitress at the Shangri-La casino, hired by casino boss Shelly Kaplow (Alec Baldwin) to seduce the casino's `cooler'- fellow hired to bring bad luck to people on hot streaks- Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy) into not quitting his job at the end of a week, after paying himself out of Kaplow's debt.
Basically, Bello's the only real reason to watch the film- her acting as the waitress who falls in love with ... Read More

Its sad to see hollywood talent reduced to making pc, vile and immoral films such as this. This is just another film trying to show normalcy where none exists. When will hollywood realise no on wants to see crap like this? America is tired of the pc immoral trying to push there immorality around.Skip this movie if you have morals and intelligence

A must see for all Jonathan Rhys Meyers fans wanting to see a little more....of his acting in the beginning of his career.
"He is young and ambitious and needs to have it all no matter what it cost him or who he hurts" He's the guy your mother warned you about.
