VHS : Valley of the Dolls (Spec)
DOLLS!!! What may have been at the time of release "shocking" dialogue is why Valley of the Dolls will live in infamy. "Well Broad-way doesn't go for booozze and pills." Helen Larson tells Neeley O'Hara at the start of their catfight in the powder room. Great fun to watch with your best Gay friends. Great extras included. Packaging is well done and comes with lobby cards.

VHS : Ray
"Ray" is what I would describe as a standard Hollywood version of a high budget biography film. What makes this movie special is the subject; Ray Charles. We get a somewhat complex picture of Ray Charles with interspersed flash backs to give us "deep background". It was generally known that Mr. Charles had his weakness for drugs but I didn't realize how strong the addiction was. The acting is very good but I had a real problem understanding much of the dialogue of Jimmie Foxx; the actor who plays Mr. Charles. I don't recall Ray Charles as a mumbler although I don't know that I saw him all that much in interviews or talk shows. However, if it was the was he spoke, there was no need to put that into the movie and leave many in the audience scratching their heads and wondering what he said. For ... Read More

VHS : Only Thrill
Peter Masterson directs another tender film in the manner of his 'The Trip To Bountiful'. Based on the play by Larry Ketron (who also wrote the screenplay) THE ONLY THRILL follows the lives of four people over a period of 30 years, a time frame that wisely incorporates all the changes that happened between the 1960s and into 1996. Not only is this a strong story about relationship possibilities, it is a chronicle of the changing mores from the decade of 'Love' to the decade of dissolution: social changes here documented make a lasting impression on those of us who have lived that time frame.

Reece McHenry (Sam Shepard) owns a Used Clothing store in Austin, Texas and employs Carol Fitzsimmons (Diane Keaton) as his seamstress. Reece's wife has been in a vegetative state for years and Reece has ... Read More

VHS : Don't Make Waves
I recorded this off TCM last week, mostly because I saw it had an appearance by Sharon Tate from the same year she did "The Fearless Vampire Killers." Which is, of course, a perfectly good reason to see any movie.

And while there's a fair amount here to satisfy people who just want to see Tate -- specifically some long, strange shots of her in a bikini bouncing endlessly on a beachside trampoline -- there's a lot more going on here.

"Waves" is basically a rake's progress tale as stammering, backstory-free Tony Curtis arrives in California and charms/scams his way to the top of a Malibu swimming pool empire.

Along the way he meets the aforementioned Tate (as a vacant but intrepid skydiver named ... Malibu); an accident-prone, broken-English-spouting Claudia Cardinale who ... Read More

VHS : Fearless Vampire Killers
This an older vampire movie, starring Sharon Tate, which incorporates wonderful scenery with old castles surrounded by snow capped mountains.
Unlike the blood and gore horror films of today, this movie offers comic releif, from the gay vampire to the Jewish vampire who laughs when presented with a cross.
From the small village to the stone castle, this movie is a visual delight.

6.The 13 Chairs starring: Sharon Tate, Orson Welles, Terry Thomas

VHS : The 13 Chairs
Filmed in the spring of 1969, this comedy about the hunt for a chair that has very valuable jewels in it was to be Sharon Tates final film before the Manson family invaded her Bel Air home and butchered she and her guests. Sharon does a great job in the film and her penchant for comedy was beginning to peak. The plot is a bit weak and
the budget for this film was not on par with her earlier work. Still a must for any Sharon Tate fan. Also, the music in this film really helps the quality. Great late 60s Burt Bacharach type soundtrack. It is sad watching this video as some scenes Sharon looks visably pregnant. Not the best of her short career, but worth it for this final film.
Released in early 1970, the film proved to be a box office failure.

The fighting scenes and the idea that Denmark has MOUNTAINS makes this in the class of a turkey - I mean - a spoof is OK - but you still have to do your research.... What if we found a wonderful beach in the film The Sound Of Music(with Austrian locations???)???

What saves this film is the comedy of Sharon Tate. She`s right on target every time she appears and the film should be granted many TV-screenings because of her... The music is pure 60s(quite amusing...) The scene in?which Matt Helm, upon seeing a dead Linka(Elke Sommer), informs Freya Carlson "That could have been you" - and her stubborn denials - puts tears 2 1s eyes - knowing what happened to Sharon a year later....

It is campy but by now I enjoy the film because it is so hilarious.... If you watch Sharon`s films... you`ll see she works on her magic ... Read More

I vaguely remember something about VHS versions of old BEVERLY HILLBILLIES episodes being made available WITHOUT the theme song and background music provided by Earl Flatt and Lester Scruggs. Licensing problems apparently got in the way. Well, one thing is clear. If you've ever wondered how essential a good theme song and soundtrack can be to a television series, this lacklustre set will provide you all the evidence you'll need. And--as they say---it ain't pretty.

I loved the BEVERLY HILLBILLIES when I was 10, because it played to my emerging sense of absurdity. I didn't realize that it was classic fish-out-water comedy (or maybe NOT so classic, but it seemed so at the time). Revisiting the series some 40 years later could have been a fun-filled exercise in nostalgia, but without the classic theme and the bits of country pickin' ... Read More
