VHS : Wicked Stepmother
After a 60 year acting career, a double mastectomy, followed immediately by a dabilitating stroke, 'The First Lady of American Cinema', Bette Davis kept acting. While she was living with terminal cancer, the daughter she adored wrote a stupid, burnable book about Davis which is obviously trying to capitalize upon her mother's successful career & great name; rather than being based in truth. Since it is a slam against Bette Davis as a mother, which has long been discredited, it is so true to the character of Bette Davis, who loved to play pranks & be humorous, to leave us with "Wicked Stepmother" as her final film. If audiences can place this film in the contexts of Davis flipping-the-bird to her spiteful, ingrate of a daughter, then "Wicked Stepmother" is extremely funny & high ... Read More

Bought this on the strength of loving "Marley & Me." Marley fans should note he appears only for around 2 minutes about half way into the movie, and doesn't keep still enough for a full shot in all that time! John Grogan's description of Marley's breathing destroying the sound is right - but sadly the "exit the car" scene he makes so much of in the book is reduced to a few frames of the dog lying inside the van in the actual cut.

Of the movie itself, and the human cast, they all struggle with dodgy dialogue and enthusiastic but deeply flawed direction. The main issues, though are in script narrative, editing and continuity - all of which left this viewer howling with frustration.

Tom Guiry and Danielle Comerford should consider full-time dramatic careers as they ... Read More

Really boring film. It is nothing but Hollywood insider humor (and most of that is nothing but petty bitchery) and cameos. If you like to see "stars" sitting around talking (blah, blah, blah) and think that is funny, by all means - this is the film for you.

I was thrilled to acquire this wonderful film about a great black musician. I have played his music on the piano for years, so when I first saw this movie on TV many years ago, I was ecstatic. When I finally purchased the VCR, I took it to my workplace (in this case, a men's prison) and had it shown to the inmates during "Black History week" over the prison's video system. I was proud to show a quality movie to an inmate population that was beter than 50% black. They really enjoyed and appreciated seeing the story of the King of Ragtime and many had never heard of him, so this movie certainly enriched their knowledge of this famous historical personality.

6.Tin Men starring: Richard Dreyfuss, Danny DeVito, Barbara Hershey, John Mahoney, Jackie Gayle
directed by: Barry Levinson

VHS : Tin Men
Twenty years past its release date, Tin Men remains a keeper. Danny DeVito may have worn out his exasperated/enraged small man schtick by now, but in 1987 it was still fresh. Like Diner, Tin Men is set in end-of-an-era Baltimore, 1963, and so much that is in it has disappeared or declined. Crowd noise from old Memorial Stadium fills a part of one scene and the camera captures those brick row houses that lined the streets around the stadium in their prime. The Life Magazine scam scene and the diner and driving riffs on Bonanza are laugh out loud funny. In an excellent cast -- not only of leads, but with some of the era's best supporting players --, Barbara Hershey as the wife caught between the tantrums of shady aluminum siding salesmen stands out. And the fender level camera view of the tin men parking ... Read More

This is a kind of story you can relate to. The two main characters seem to have a good chemistry, and hot Perez is wonderful as the awful character she is expected to be. Not very far from the typical romantic comedy though.

VHS : When Pigs Fly
So, we all make mistakes and my latest was my earlier review of this movie. I was pretty ruthless and critical. And let me tell you, for the Marianne Faithfull faithful fan that I am, it was not easy for me to write!
After watching this a 2nd time, I found myself pulled into the whimsical tale. I think Sara Driver (director) has actually put together a sweet and thoughtful film. Why this all escaped me the 1rst time is a mystery. Maybe I'd had a bad day! haha
Both Marianne and Alfred Molina do a great job with this story of revenge and salvation.(I'm still not too wild about the other actors' jobs) We get to see the sweetness of Ruthie and Lily, the two ghosts who have both met tragic ends. The Molina character is a lost soul who longs for redemption and finds it by helping our wandering, ghostly twosome. Who, ... Read More

Dennis Christoper travels west to find himself after his brother dies just after cutting his first jazz/blues record. He ends up in a surf 60's world that might as well be the moon...as he is really out of place and feels lost and totally alone. Enter a over-the-hill bar owner who still carries a torch for his ex-wife,he takes the boy in over the protests of his daughter. This begins a relearning period of mistakes and absolute blunders until he finally gets the girl and looses the father figure to an unexpected heart attack without being able to say he was sorry for doubting his success in the Olympics. The film is twisted with good and bad surfers, poor little rich girls and pott heads along with beach vollyball at it's roots. I recommend seeing this film as it is funny and I left alot out because there is so many goings ... Read More
