VHS : Josh & Sam
Josh and S.A.M. is one of my favorite movies. Having worked with kids
much of my adult life, I am sensitive to the problems children have in
dysfunctional or rejecting families. The film is about two brothers,
Josh and Sam (Jacob Tierney and Noah Fleiss) ages 12 and 8 respectively.
(Fleiss should have been cast as a 9 or 10 year old). They are complete
opposites, the older a computer nerd and fabricator, the younger a jock
with ADD symptoms. They do not get along, with Josh resenting Sam's
athleticism and Sam smarting from Josh's scorn. Their mother is a
divorcee, more involved in her new love interest than her boys, while
their father has remarried and is living in Florida with his new wife
and her two cloddish jock sons, appearing ... Read More

It's super easy to tell the Robbins/Sarandon mindset on the issue of capital punishment by watching this movie. While it is well made and engaging, they chose to tell the story in a way which leaves little doubt about their feelings on the issue. That's not a bad thing, but it took some of the impact out of it for me, by overtly dramaticizing certain scenes, particularly the drawn out climax. It just took it to a politicized ending for me , rather than a singularly compelling one. That aside, Sarandon and Penn both performed well, although the characters situations lend themselves to heavy drama, presumeably any good actors forte.

VHS : My Chauffeur
Initially, I snagged this DVD for two reasons - it had Deborah Foreman in it (which I'm a fan of) and I wanted to hear the soundtrack. Gladly, I never saw it back in the 80s, so it was entirely fresh to me. I'm really happy that it's a part of my DVD library now, for it is very funny and Deborah looks her best since "Valley Girl". Funny thing is, right from the start, when she shows up at the Brentwood Limousine Company, her acting surprised me due to it being so familiar. Then it hit me, she mixed together the character style of her friend, Michelle Meyrink (from "Real Genius") and a bit of Ally Sheedy from "The Breakfast Club". Michelle in the fast talking, always hyper personality and Ally for the quick responses like "No!". If you are a fan of "The Breakfast Club", you'll know what I'm talking about. Michelle ... VHS : Fast Times at Ridgemont High
FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH is the best comical high school movie I've ever seen along with the fact that this DVD has some very interesting bonus features on it as well like showing scenes of "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" where they played a popular hit song in the 1980's like "She's Gonna Be Somebody's Baby Tonight" by Jackson Browne, "We Got The Beat" by The Go Go's, etc.

In addition to some of the interesting bonus features on this DVD, it showed the cast & crew of "Fast Times" like Sean Penn(Jeffrey Spiccolli), Judge Reinhold(Brad Hamilton), Phoebe Cates(Linda), Jennifer Jason-Leigh(Stacey), Bobby Romanus(Mike Damone), Brian Backer(Mark Ratner)etc.; talking about their experience with doing the movie and looking back on it when it was released back in the Summer of 1982.

VHS : I Am Sam
I've never seen this movie before, but my mum was practically giving it away (she's running out of space) so I grabbed it, and just happened to be in the mood for it. Instead of letting it sit and gather dust until I happen to be in the mood for it. Like most of my "to watch" pile is.

I Am Sam is one of those gems of movies that just has to be seen. From the sweetness of Sam, to the sarcasticness of Michelle Pfeiffer, to Dakota Fanning's debut film role. Each character has a role to fill, and the film could have so failed miserably, but each star makes their role special. Sean was unbelievable as Sam, although there are influences from Rain Man. He captures every emotion perfectly, of a bewildered father, from putting on a nappy (with badges), to reading to his daughter, to trying to work out life without her. And trying to ... Read More

What a drag! A movie may be well-acted and worthy of many technical credits, but this plot was depressing, disturbing, and not even remotely entertaining.

I realize that life is not all hearts and flowers. In fact, I can get into a heavy drama with the best of them, provided there is some element of hope, resolution, redemption or something that I can walk away feeling good about.

There is nothing positive about this storyline and I cannot imagine anyone feeling uplifted by it.

Sorry, Mr. Eastwood. I cannot recommend this film, although you have certainly given us other movies that were worth writing home about.

Anything with Michael Douglas is great, but this is a real thriller and who-dun-it! It will keep you guessing until the end. A "best buy" as far as I'm concerned.

This is a great mob/gangster movie with a great cast. Surprisingly, it has been largely overlooked. In fact, I had never even heard of it until I saw it on IFC in 2008, 18 years after it was released!

This movie also has a lot of similarities with The Departed. I am surprised few have noted the similarities:

*The Irish Mob.
*The demented Irish Mob "Godfather," played by Ed Harris.
*The undercover cop who was affiliated with the gang, left, became an officer, went undercover, and then returned.
*The love interest with a person close to the undercover officer's friend.
