We have been Herriot fans for years, and cannot get enough of the wonderful episodes on these videos. Laughter and warmth balance the truths of real-life people the pre- and post-war for farmers in the English Dales. We especially like the actors who participate ... they are not the Hollywood model types, but instead are people who easily make you believe they lived through the various stories.

Can't say enough good about it ... these are classic.

VHS : Thunder Alley
Generally, there's no middle ground when it comes to movies about the ups and downs of a rock & roll band;these films are either very good or very bad.Thunder Alley would be in the latter category. It joins other movies like Eddie And The Cruisers(both I and II),Satisfaction and The Light Of Day in that festering dumpster of rock & roll movies that take themselves far too seriously and seem to forget why people enjoy rock & roll in the first place.I mean, where's the fun?In Thunder Alley, the band Magic(and people think "The Wiggles" is a stupid name)is an up and coming group who's future is being manipulated by a sleazy local music promoter. The sleazy promoter is so intent on derailing Magic from it's collision course with rock stardom that he gets the band's keyboard player(the man-pretty Scott McGinnis) ... VHS : Tall Tale: Unbelievable Adventure
TALL TALE has the potential to be an excellent film. The possibilities of a tall tale adventure with Pecos Bill, Calamity Jane, Paul Bunyan, and John Henry should be great. This isn't.
The two stars I gave it are for two performances that head and pretty good cast and the music by Randy Edelmen (the genius behind GETTYSBURG's score). Patrick Swayze is an excellent actor, and now I fully appreciate his ability to turn a complete dud of a role into gold. He takes the role of Pecos, a shallow character, and steals every moment onscreen. When he flies in and out of his tornado, you don't even glance at the larger-than-life twister because you're mesmorized by Swayze. He's excellent.
The other good acting is by Stephen Lang (also from GETTYSBURG) in a brief role as the hero's dad. The music is amazing. ... Read More

7.The Great Gatsby starring: Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Bruce Dern, Karen Black, Scott Wilson

VHS : The Great Gatsby
Perhaps some classics cannot be made into movies. THE GREAT GATSBY, which makes anybody's list of the great American novels, may just be one. Having just seen this film again for the first time since its release, I think I need to reread the novel. The chief flaw of the movie is the casting of Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan. While she certainly can act and become hysterical at the smell of a room full of roses, it is difficult to understand the power that she holds on Gatsby. While Redford makes an adequate if not outstanding Gatsby, Sam Waterston, a very fine actor indeed, is perfectly cast as Gatsby's neighbor. Bruce Dern works as the boorish Tom Buchanan, Karen Black isn't bad as his woman on the side, and Scott Wilson as her cuckolded husband who seeks revenge is well cast.

The music by Nelson Riddle, ... Read More
