VHS : It Came Upon the Midnight Clear
I haven't seen this movie on TV in many years. How sad that such a heartwarming movie has been discarded by the networks. There are plenty of other Christmas movies I could sure do without that they choose to show instead.
I checked again this year to see if it available on DVD and it's not or I would have bought it. We don't own a VCR any longer and I think the price for the VHS are a little much.

VHS : Hustler
I got this for our "movie night" group the week after Newman's death in lieu of a Woody Allen pick that was originnaly on the schedule. It was very fitting; and we had all forgotten what a great film this really is.

Gleason is superb (even with the limited screen time), George C. Scott very much holds the plot together, and Newman plays the pathetic hero so very well.

VHS : Anatomy of a Murder
I've been watching the entire Otto Preminger catalog lately, and I got around to seeing what is arguably his most famous film. Seeing it again makes me realise that it's a masterpiece of tension, performances, dialogue, and cinematography.

There is so much to like about this film. Nothing here in the trial or the characterisations is present in black and white (there's even a dialogue by Stewart to a potential witness about how people aren't black and white). It is full blown ambiguity, resulting in a far more grown up and mature film than most current courtroom dramas are. It is also refreshingly un-PC, unlike modern courtroom dramas. I like to constrast this film with overblown, incredibly melodramatic shows like The Practice, which I used to watch simply because it was unintentionally ... Read More

****SPOILERS ****
I normally enjoy the Catherine Cookson movies, but this one was so ridiculous I had to comment on it. I found Hannah to be such an unsympathetic character for being so meek and foolish and full of self-pity. How can she think it was ok to want to marry her half-brother? She took advantage of the well-meaning Fred and trampled on his hopes without a second thought. In comparison, we see her step-sister Margaret, who also experienced disappointment in love, go out and make something happen for herself. Hannah's treatment of her husband was appaling. Fred cared for her while she was sick (after roaming in the rain with another man on her wedding day) and took her on in good faith. In return she cheated on him and had the gall to expect to inherit all his possessions to use for her lover. Hannah ... Read More

I did not realize that this DVD features Scrappy Doo, Scooby Doo's nephew, or else I would not have purchased it. I strongly prefer the traditional Scooby Doo gang and dislike Scrappy Doo. This is the worst Scooby Doo movie that I've ever seen and I do not recommend it.

My family's favorite Scooby Doo movies are the "Scooby Doo, Where Are You?" Complete DVD Seasons 1 and 2... buy it instead.

I'm a big G C Scott fan. He was so good at both comedy & drama. I was surprised to come across a movie he'd made that I'd never heard a word about. But, this was released in the early 70's when I was tot so it was a pleasant surprise to find this one listed on Amazon. If you love your a puzzler & don't mind mixing in comedy you'll enjoy this one. There is a mystery here but for the most part the funnier lines stick out in the film. Classic Scott performance. There are murders going on in the hospital while the staff seems to be falling apart. Also an attraction between Riggs & Scott. It all mixes in to make for a very good film.

VHS : The Best of Stars on Ice Volume 1
Scott Hamilton (Olympic Gold medalist in '84), always a terrific showman, is the perfect host for these selections from the "Stars on Ice" tour, and treats us also to two of his performances, starting with "Steppin Out" (sung by Tony Bennett), and Scott's style and musicality are a joy to watch.
Kristi Yamaguchi ('92 Olympic Gold), with grace and beauty, follows with her lovely "Madam Butterfly".
Britain's Torvill and Dean ('84 Olympic Gold) perform my favorite selection, to the long version of the Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Take 5". The way they dance with the music is like as if they were a fifth instrument; it is glorious to watch, and pure artistry on ice.
Paul Wylie ('92 Olympic Silver) does a wonderful tribute to President Kennedy, to an excerpt from John Williams' film score for "JFK".
