Interesting and easy read - Fox has done his research well. My late husband's parents were Kenya settlers and his father had NO respect for the Happy Valley crowd AT ALL. Fox has certainly filled in many of the gaps left in the story my husband, Len Gill told me and has introduced me to a new side of some of the characters Len knew. I only wish I had read this book before my husband died of cancer. So many questions - so little time for answers.

This is a wonderful movie and I don't understand why is has not been released on DVD years ago. It was one of Burt Reynolds best films, one that he should be proud to have released on DVD for all to see and let those that have not seen it find out just how great of a movie it really is.
This is one person that hopes it is released very soon, because it is one movie I will purchase ASAP...
Thanks
Someone who loves this movie........

Ahhh, I too remember watching this on late night HBO along with H.O.T.S., Revenge of the Nerds, and a few others that we all thought were cool, risque teen 80's flicks back in the day. I would love to own this on DVD!! Brings back memories of late summer nights and middle school sleepovers.

For any woman who has experienced the love of a distant land and embers that continue to burn, this is a must see! I just wish it was on DVD already! That last scene, her last answer to his question....what woman wouldn't just love to be her in this movie? Been there...done it. Put this on DVD already!

VHS : Blow Up
Today, I will be writing a review of Michaelangelo Antonioni's 1966 film Blow-Up. It will be a meandering discourse as a means of distraction, a way of blurring my own awareness of the daily slough of lies and hate in which we drown (the news).

Please take your seats.

First, a simple question. Are you happy? It is a question much in the news. Mike Leigh's new film, Happy-Go-Lucky, is about a persistently cheerful woman. In the current off-Broadway play, Boys' Life, an adult/adolescent male tells a girl he is trying to pick up, "Nobody's happy. That's the way things are supposed to be."

Recent studies show that people are happy in Denmark and in most Latin American countries, regardless of income. Money has very little to do with happiness, despite what Joe the Plumber may have been conditioned ... Read More

As the previous viewer was upset over the book vs. movie I can say I didn't even know there was a book to this story. It's a wonderful story - beautfully told and it will keep you on hte end your seat the entire time. I wish they would make in on DVD. It deserves one!

VHS : Those Magnificent Men Their Flying Machines
Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines is the British version of The Magnificent Race but it's more like a ripoff. The film uses the real life 1910 event as the basis for the movie but there aren't any similarities beyond that. It's directed & co-written by Ken Annakin, I have yet to find a reason to recommend anything in his name.

The film has a large pool of stars but almost all of them are B-list entities. The story centers on Orvil Newton (Stuart Whitman),an American from the wild West, who enters the contest. Patricia Rawnsley (Sarah Miles) is the female lead & is the daughter of Lord Rawnsley (Robert Morley) who is the publisher of a newspaper & the one who offers 10,000 pounds to the winner of the London to Paris air race. Richard Mays (James Fox), a British competitor, sort of loves Patricia & is ... Read More

VHS : The Harem - The Original Miniseries Box Set
I enjoyed this seemingly made for TV movie when I saw it back in 1990. I discovered afterward there was another movie with the title of Harem made the same year (1985-86) and starring Nastassja Kinski. That one was a bit darker, but also enjoyable.
I had already seen Nancy Travis, the starlet of this Harem, in the Richard Gere cop thriller Internal Affairs, and in a bit part in Married to the Mob, so at the time she was babelicious.
It's become a common plot, in these types of movies, to have a beautiful western woman kidnapped by a lustful or politically-motivated sultan or sheik (I think of the excellent The Wind and the Lion, the surreal The Sheltering Sky, then Sahara and a bunch of lesser movies). But Harem executes this plot well - you sympathize for Jessica, the character played by Nancy Travis, you want her fiance to rescue ... Read More

10.The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea starring: Sarah Miles, Kris Kristofferson, Jonathan Kahn, Margo Cunningham, Earl Rhodes

VHS : The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea
"The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea" was a shocking film when first released in 1976 because of its blend of sex and mystery-bred tension. The newly-released DVD is very high quality and the content--based on Yukio Mishima's novel--remains erotic and scary. The performances are very good, with Sarah Miles especially showing her strengths (and lots of other things). The film is polarizing; many will stop watching in the first 30 minutes, but most will find it captivating.
