D-day had failed. Kennedy is president, Joseph sr. that is, not John. Hitler is about to celebrate his 75th birthday. That was all the exposition I needed. It's springtime for Hitler in Germainia. We lost. It is the early 60's & the cold war has taken a hard left turn from what we know happen. The Germans are still fighting the Russians. Hitler wants a peace treaty with The United States. It is about to happen. President Kennedy is coming to Berlin & bringing a lot of reporters. One problem: the Final Solution, what we now know as the Holocaust has never been made public. Any living officials with first hand knowledge are being bumped off. One of these murders becomes public & has to appear to be investigated. SS officer March (Rutger Hauer) is the police detective assigned to ... Read More

VHS : Green Man
I have this DVD, which I obtained from the U.K., and recommend it to all viewers. If you can, try and get a copy of this film on either DVD, or VHS, it is well worth the time and money. This excellent BBC film, first aired in 1992. [In the USA]. The entire film is outstanding! Maurice Allington (Albert Finney) is a womanizing alcoholic, and the owner of the "Green Man Inn." When his father dies, he begins to see someone no one else can. Everyone shrugs it off as too much drink. However, there is something amiss at the Green Man Inn. Only Lucy, his young daughter believes that he is seeing something from another spiritual plane. His wife and friends believe that the alcohol is finally affecting his mind. Including his Doctor. And more importantly, a clergyman too!

One of the main attractions of ... Read More

VHS : The Scarlet Pimpernel Box Set
One reviewer here comments that the Pimpernel books are ones any child should read.

Well, not in the original perhaps: the Barnoness' original "Scarlet Pimpernel" book is blatently anti-Semitic in the very "best" English uppercrust tradition of the sixteenth-twentieth centuries. In order to appear harmless and keep the villain at arms length, the hero disguises himself as a typical old dirty grasping servile cowering cowardly Jew. Let the kiddies watch the videos instead.

VHS : Element of Doubt
On the one hand, "Element of Doubt" is an interesting thriller with good performances that keep you guessing. On the other hand, it's more distasteful than fun -- unlike Hitchcock's "Suspicion," which is obviously its inspiration.

It's certainly worth seeing -- once. But what makes subsequent viewings of mysteries enjoyable are other elements (like humor or particularly interesting performances) that compensate for the lack of surprise once you know the plot twists. Unfortunately, you won't find those extra elements here.
