VHS : Lady Jane
This movie was SO awful, dreary and depressing that my friend and I stopped watching it about 1 hour into it - we couldn't take it anymore!! And we are both HUGE Tudor history fans. But this film was just awful in every way; it was a total waste of money and I wish I could return it!!!

If you want to see REAL Tudors drama with fabulous acting, great scenery and extraordinary costumes, check out The Tudors on Showtime - do yourself a favor and don't bother with "Lady Jane"!

VHS : Lisztomania
I had wanted to see "Lisztomania" since first reading about it in the brilliant "Golden Turkey Awards" in 1980. True to its reputation, Roger Daltrey plays Franz Liszt in a highly stylized (major understatement) manner as an oversexed rock star, singing his way from one predicament to another and making an arch enemy of Richard Wagner, who exists solely to subjugate the world to Nazi Germany, and who is a vampire on the side. I appreciated that Wagner's hat said "Nietzsche," which made his philosophy somewhat evident early on. Nice touch, Ken.

In the midst of this bedlam Pope Ringo (I'm not kidding: Ringo Starr is the Pope, complete with eye patch and cowboy boots) makes Liszt attempt to convert Wagner to Catholicism in exchange for his (the Pope's) permission for Liszt to marry. ... Read More

VHS : Zardoz
Considering a title like "Zardoz" and a cover featuring Sean Connery in what looks like a red diaper, this movie has a lot more seriousness and quality going for it. It is 70s science fiction: glitzy, ridiculous special effects providing a medium for real social commentary. The thing is, though, Boorman plays up the surreal and Carnivalesque in this movie, resulting in something closer to a fever dream than escapist fantasy. Re-introducing the social commentary results in a movie that is compelling and maddening all at once.

If a viewer gets past the opening and the following introduction of Zardoz the giant gun-giving clay head without thinking that something is amiss, they probably aren't actually taking the movie seriously enough on its own terms, and from there it's pretty easy to ... Read More

4.Invasion: Earth starring: Maggie O'Neill, Nicola Grier, Vincent Regan, Fred Ward, Phyllis Logan

VHS : Invasion: Earth
Good sci-fi feast for fans of invasion dramas. My only complaint is the lack of closed captioning - not only for those who have hearing issues but also for those who have difficulty with British dialogue. It would have earned 5 stars had they added that one simple feature. The BBC tends to produce quality material with a focus on character development rather than expensive special effects; this is no different. It is worth watching - even owning - if this is the kind of stuff you like to see.

There have been many Anna Karenina adapatations but this 2000 Masterpiece Theatre production I regard as the best. Helen Mcrory is probably the best Anna I have seen. Stephen dillane who plays Karenin portrays his character in very symphatic light you feel bad for his charcter yet you feel bad for Anna in her loveless marriage. Kevin Mckidd plays vronsky and brings charm. And unlike other version Levins story is not cut out. Though the costumes are not as pretty as the 1997 version or the actors as attractive that does not matter this just a enjoyable tragic adaptation of Anna Karenina.

Disgusting movie that leaves nothing to the imagination. Sex scene after sex scene is all through this movie. It is degrading and gross. The only good thing about this movie was Tom's attidude outside of the bedroom. I can't recommend this movie to anyone.

VHS : Lady Windermere's Fan
This BBC-produced version is a bit dry and stale for students used to MTV-style filming and pacing. However, each production is very true to the original works. The biography of Wilde is very valuable for helping students understand how his life influenced his work. The most enjoyable production of The Importance of Being Earnest is the newish one staring Colin Firth and Rupert Everett. It is based more on the original 4 act version of the play. It is delightful, but the director took a bit too much artistic license by putting in some "funnies" that were anachronistic. I recommend using both versions. This collection includes his most important works including The Picture of Dorian Grey.
