VHS : Ode to Billy Joe
*********** SPOILER ALERT ***********

This was a well-acted portrayal of teen heartache and heartbreak.

The lyrics of the theme song by Bobbie Gentry allegedly had some basis in truth.

Max Baer Jr.'s production of this film gave him a vehicle to break out of his "Jethro Bodine" stereotype.

A young Mackenzie Philips played Bobbie Lee's friend.

When I saw this film as a youth one of my schoolmates reached the conclusion that "Billy Joe was gay". I disagreed then and I still do.

Billy Joe was young, intoxicated, and taken advantage of by an older man. There was nothing to suggest that he was on the prowl, searching for male partners. If anything, he was totally in love with and attracted to his girl.

VHS : My Mother's Secret Life
Movie is well scripted and well acted. Loni Anderson plays an over the hill prostitute, whose life is changed when her daughter comes to live with her. Movie gives an indepth look about the seedy side of prostitution. Loni gives a better than average performance and so does Amanda Wyss as Loni's daughter. Nice views of San Francisco in movie and Loni proves she doesn't have to get out her Social Security card for income. Fully recommend to viewers. A+

This TVM is based on the (presumably true) lives of Ethel and James Lee, a blind couple who were the first to legally adopt children in America. What distinguishes the teleplay by Barbara Turner is her presentation of the couple played by Mare Winningham and Keith Carradine as individuals, in spite of being blind. Often writers are tempted to make martyrs of those living with handicaps, in the "testament to the human spirit" nauseating genre, but Turner avoids that sanctimoniousness. These people are extraordinary and not just for being blind. Since the narrative begins with Ethel Lee as a child, Turner's focus is more on Winningham, than Carradine, and Winningham gives her Ethel a subtle eccentricity. Winningham soars over her "I'm playing a blind person" business, something which Carradine with ... Read More

So stated the billboard ads for this 1977 finale to the feature film trilogy of the legendary Buford Pusser. Like all such films the movie makers played sort of fast and loose with the facts. Among the things a bit off; In the movie, Buford is voted out of office by a community that feels it no longer needs his style of law enforcement. In real life, Pusser served two terms as sheriff and was not permited by state law to run again. The movie shows him broke, down on his luck and unsure how he's going to make a living and support his family until a movie producer comes to see him and proposes making a movie on his life. Buford had sold his story to several magazines and was having a book written on him while he was still sherrif. As he was preparing to step down, he was already talking with hollywood ... Read More

VHS : Solar Crisis (VHS)
Solar Crisis turned out to be a surprise. At first, the film starts out as a typical science fiction movie; you know, pretentious. Then, slowly as the plot finally emerges out from its "suspense"--behold!--a story that can be considered truly "science fiction." Without giving its ending away, Solar Crisis spiral its story and its characters into the heart of the sun. The movie does one thing that most science fiction film of late have failed to accomplish or forgotten its original premise: that self-sacrifice--not space exploration--is the ultimate adventure.

VHS : The Osterman Weekend
While some critics attacked `The Osterman Weekend' as not making any sense and having an incoherent plot, I understood it just fine. I just didn't like it.

With an impressive cast and intriguing premise `The Osterman Weekend' seems like a sure hit. However I was unable to find a single redeeming element of the film.

The plot: Rutger Hauer stars as an expose' talk show journalist planning for annual college reunion with Berkeley alumni at his estate. Enter CIA agent John Hurt whom confronts Hauer with evidence that his three best friends, Craig T Nelson, Dennis Hopper, and Chris Sarandon are KGB agents planning to kill him.

Hauer is skeptical but after Hurt stages a kidnapping of Mrs. Hauer and son and blames it on the KGB, Hauer is compelled to allow Hurt to place elaborate surveillance video ... Read More
