VHS : Return to Salem's Lot
If your a fan of 80's B-Movies like myself, this one is a must-have in your collection. While this doesn't compare to the original Salem's Lot, there is still entertaining humor to be had in this one. Most will rate this film terrible, but as the title of my review goes, it's only for the campy B-Movie collector only. too bad it's not officially on DVD....

VHS : The Last Movie
I heard Peter Fonda say that even though his father Henry Fonda didn't like Dennis Hopper that after he read 'The Last Movie' he said, "this is one of the great westerns of our time." Well, Hank may have been right about what was on the page but what ended up on film was a cluttered mess. I am a fan of Dennis Hopper somewhat but no matter how you slice it or how much his Hollywood friends try to dress it up this movie stunk. I bought it back in the early 90's and watched it. I gave it to a friend to watch and he never gave it back and I didn't care one bit. El stinkerOO!!!

VHS : The American Friend
The tension is so palpable here that it's a character in and of itself.

Tom Ripley, as played by Dennis Hopper, feels truer to his EASY RIDER role than the character in the novel upon which the movie is based, as some critics have said. I say "feels truer" because I haven't seen the first or read the second, but I believe those critics.

But that doesn't matter. Not at all. This movie is about Jonathan Zimmerman, as played by Bruno Ganz. Every time he's on the screen, which is most of the time, you're just gripped in both your mind and your gut and you can't turn away, reach down for a drink of water, hit pause and go to the bathroom, or anything.

I'm one of those weird animals who's just as comfortable with Hollywood crap as I am with literary classics. My wife's ... Read More

VHS : Slapstick of Another Kind
Based on the Kurt Vonnegut novel "Slapstick - Or Lonesome No More," SLAPSTICK OF ANOTHER KIND was a box office bomb filmed in 1982 but not released in the U.S. until two years later. Star Jerry Lewis was nominated for the Worst Actor Golden Raspberry for his efforts here. Orson Welles, scraping the bottom of a distinguished career, vocalized the "Father of the Aliens."

SYNOPSIS--

A beautiful and renowned couple (Lewis and Kahn) give birth to mentally deficient twins who look like their famous parents, with one exception: the kids grow up to have oversized heads. It turns out they were just pretending to be stupid, for when they touch heads their intellectual abilities are second to none. After a former Chinese ambassador (Morita) fails to convince parents and President (Backus) that the twins ... Read More

I'm reviewing the Criterion Collection edition, which looked like a fine transfer to me. If you are a Godard completist, I suppose this version would be on your list. Thee disc of extra is a good example of what the Criterion collection can be all about- a full disc of goodies- great if you are super into this movie or Godard. Personally, I don't like this movie, which is why the rating isn't higher, but it's a handsome piece to own. And it's the Criterion Collection so... what choice do you have?

VHS : A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies
"A personal journey with Martin Scorsese through American movies" (1995) is the kind of documentary I love, one that entertains but also manages to teach me something new at the same time.

Scorsese, a great director, shows that he is also a good teacher, telling the spectator about American movies that made an impression on him when he was growing up. Martin Scorsese talks about classic American movies, but also about the directors that made them. He doesnt pretend to be objective, pointing out that "I can only talk about what has moved me or intrigued me". That is probably the reason why Scorsese talks not only about classics like "Stagecoach", but also about little known movies like "Cat people", highlighting the reason why each one is special.

I can sincerely say that the only fault that I can find ... Read More

VHS : Tigrero:Film That Was Never Made
Well, the then octogenarian maverick movie director Samuel Fuller is animated enough, and his co-star, indy director Jim Jarmusch, is laid back enough to make an interesting screen duo in Finnish director Mika Kaurismäki's 1994's TIGRERO: A FILM THAT WAS NEVER MADE.

`Tigrero,' the unmade film in question, is a movie Fuller had sold to the studios in the 1950s. It's a love story larded onto a profile of a `tigrero,' a hunter of tigers, or jaguars, I guess, in the wilds of Brazil. The movie was a go, even had a cast - John Wayne as the tiger hunter, Ava Gardner and Tyrone Powell as the uneasily married couple - when it was quashed when insurance companies blanched and refused to underwrite the production. Not before, however, Fuller and crew had traveled into the interior of Brazil and spent some time filming a native village located ... Read More
