"A stroll around Mont St Michel, France brings together three highly successful and educated people with disparate worldviews; a politician, a poet and a physicist. A conversation ensues about the nature of reality and the new physics that challenges what we perceive to be the tangible world around us.

The '91 film `Mindwalk' is a New Age lecture presented in the guise of a motion picture. It's really quite painless, informative and even enjoyable at times. The tour around St. Michel is wonderful and a stellar cast consisting of Liv Ullmann, Sam Waterston and John Heard make the movie well worth a watch.

One of the most humorous, get the establishment I've seen. Walter Mattheau is superb as the opera singing, ex CIA agent getting his own back on the man who fired him. Many laughs and great imaginative writing. Buy this and have a fun experience.

I have been a fan of Mr. William Shirer for many years and have read about his correspondence during the Nazi regime in Germany. This video compliments highly his views and the condition of the people very well during those years. Being a newspaperman he is critical and imaginative comparing Germany before and after the Nazi's.

VHS : Finnegan Begin Again
I bought this a couple of years ago but never had the chance to watch it. I am glad I did.

I believe the characters, I believe the story. Then again, when it is two superb craftsmen as Mary Tyler Moore and Robert Preston, it is quite easy. Incredible nuance in both of their performances, never a false note.

And Sam Waterston is a hoot!!! My wife and I are Law & Order addicts and to see him in this role was hysterical.

VHS : A House Divided
Talk about living history... I've read all the books about this family and I live in the house David built for his daughter Amanda in 1871. I can look out my window and see the spot where David's childhood home once stood. I even met Jennifer Beals when she came to see the house and the land. Although not filmed here, the movie was great - although it did take a little dramatic license. It was known Julia held a very high position of authority, very rare for a woman, much less a black slave woman. It was also apparent David felt much love for his bi-racial daughter Amanda. Only two people know the truth of nature of the relationship between David and Julia that brought Amanda into existence, if indeed David was the father. (He was married for several years and never produced children.) If ... Read More

VHS : The Great Gatsby
Perhaps some classics cannot be made into movies. THE GREAT GATSBY, which makes anybody's list of the great American novels, may justs be one. Having just seen this film again for the first time since it's release, I think I need to reread the novel. The chief flaw of the movie is the casting of Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan. While she certainly can act and become hysterical at the smell of a room full of roses, it is difficult to understand the power that she holds on Gatsby. While Redford makes an adequate if not outstanding Gatsby, Sam Waterston, a very fine actor indeed, is perfectly cast as Gatsby's neighbor. Bruce Dern works as the boorish Tom Buchanan, Karen Black isn't bad as his woman on the side, and Scott Wilson as her cuckolded husband who seeks revenge is well cast.

VHS : Heaven's Gate
I had a hard time making it through the last half of this DVD at 128X. In the "film as art" world, there is subtle and there is non-existent. Heaven's Gate, as anything beyond a monument to it's own excesses, is 4+ hours of none existence.

Even given all of this film's glaring missteps, Cimino might have blundered his way through like he did with The Deer Hunter, but for one fatal stroke - Kris fricking Kristopherson. What the hell was Cimino thinking? Were Buck Owens and Roy Clark busy that week? Who the hell ever told Kris Kristopherson that he could act? Repeatedly, in the midst of it's soft focus cinematic splendor, we are made to watch Kris Kristopherson mugging at the camera like a minor league ballplayer doing a commercial for a discount carpet outlet. I'm sorry, but there's just some ... Read More
