VHS : Voyage of the Damned
I saw this when it first came out and had never before heard of the SS St Louis...and I naively supposed that while other countries, such as Cuba, would turn away these helpless people, the USA would welcome them a la Statue of Liberty...("Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!")
apparently I was wrong, and my shock was first in discovering that this was indeed a true historical event and also that WE turned these poeple AWAY! THAT horrified me more than anything else and to this day I still do not understand WHY. This is the USA! What was up with FDR?
Excellent cast, great acting, right from the ... Read More

VHS : Irreconcilable Differences
Shelley Long is funny and warm. Her character is beautiful to watch. Ryan O'Neal also has a flair for comedy.
The plot is amusing. Sharon Stone is beautifully cast.

But - I must say, that Drew Barrymore IS the movie.
She shows so much depth that it is hard to believe. How could she feel so much and know so much at such a young age? --- but there it is on film. She is funny, deeply serious, moving and insightful.

A very enjoyable film.

VHS : The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
Having read the book and seen this movie in its earlier, original DVD release (a bargain, still, for those not wanting to shell out for this new edition), I knew what to expect in the way of story. This new transfer is, however, much more better, especially in its offering a higher-definition image with a subtler, more delineated grey scale - which is critical to the enjoyment of any well-made B&W movie. What really makes the Criterion edition so valuable are the extras included on Disk 2. First, there's a quite informative and candid interview with le Carre himself - in which he offers some revealing memories of the movie's casting, shooting, and on-set experiences as well as some criticisms of the final result. He is especially revealing about Martin Ritt, the director, an old lefty who was blacklisted during ... Read More

The movie was great when it came out and it still is when I viewed it on DVD. I had to wait a little longer because the postman missed sorted it and Turner and Hooch sent them both to somewere on the west side of of Michigan and it had to be re sorted and then delivered to my address.

Arnie plays an undercover mob guy who needs to bring down some extreme scumbags while posing as one of them. It's a very silly film but good entertainment.
Recommended if you don't mind a completely lame plot.
