I loved this movie as a child and my 2 year old loves it too.
The animation in the middle of the movie makes it a great surprise for kids.

First and foremost, this is a review for the 1951, black and white, 1.33:1 aspect ratio, 2-disc, special edition DVD and NOT for the remake (Gort! Keanu barada nikto :)

Okay so here's the lowdown; as I now have both this new edition and the original single, flipper disc, version, and having watched all of the bonus features on the new 2-disc set, I can tell you this: keep the old disc!

Why, because the 73 plus minute, making of, on the original disc is gone, replaced with a new 23 minute fluff piece that only skims the surface of the story, of the making of this film.

Gone are the lengthy on camera interviews with the producer, director and female lead, replaced instead with film historian's inane babble, with the odd snippet of voice recordings of the ... Read More

The story of a prominent and wealthy Jewish family, whose feud with a Roman friend nearly destroys them. An extremely emotional story against the backdrop of the birth and crucifixion of Jesus Christ is one of the greatest epics ever filmed. The chariot race is one of the most impressive and longest action pieces I've ever seen! That sequence alone takes the film out of the realm of greatness into an outstanding piece of visual cinema!

I first saw this movie in 1958 just before going to Japan with the US Army. It made quite an impact on me and my expectations of the Japanese. The movie does successfully capture some of the Japanese spirit as I know it. John Wayne, though he has been panned in this role, I think, embodies what may have been an accurate portrayal of the typical well meaning American in a culture he could never understand. Years later, when I happened to be in Shimoda, where the film is set, I found a small Japanese Museum, that commorated the self-sacrifice of the Japanese woman, the lovely Okichi, to her community. It depicts the 'facts' of the movie in a totally differnt light.
This movie really deserves to be put on DVD !!

There are many videos depicting Poe's tales, Tales of Terror is one, but this one truly is gripping. Unlike other films, this one has an unnamed narrator--one of Poe's motifs--and closely follows the short story. It is black & white. I teach 10th grade and love to use this film. It captures the essence of haunting fascination with death, insanity, and retribution from the grave that Poe is all about. In class when I start the film, I usually hear a crack or two about not wanting to watch some dumb black & white film, but within five minutes, the room is silent except for the film. The narrator does a really great job, and when the climax approaches, the sound effects increase making it a sit on the edge of your seat experience.

I highly recommend this film if you are ... Read More

Haven't seen this movie for 30 years, and yes it's old, but still good fun. The story of a wanabe British soldier of the Raj whose sole claim to fame was that he carried water for the soldiers he so admired. Constantly reminded that he is not a soldier Gunga Din serves with enthusiasm, even when under fire and finally proves that he was the better man.
Sure the fight scenes are dated, but it's amazing what they managed to pull off without the benefit of modern technology and expertise built on the expertise of filmakers such as this.

"The Dunwich Horror" is a movie that claims to be based on horror maestro H.P. Lovecraft's work of the same title, but one can at best describe this movie as a very liberal adaptation of Lovecraft's work. The movie itself stars Dean Stockwell as the sinister Wilbur Whatley who wishes to reclaim his family's dark heritage and standing by summoning the Old Ones through [a] using the Necronomicon, a dark book, and [b] offering up luscious co-ed Sandra Dee as the virginal sacrifice.

Luckily for Sandra Dee [this movie proved to be a disastrous comeback movie for her btw, as it was so far off from her earlier successes such as Gidget etc], her college prof, Dr Armitage [Ed Begley in a commendably credible role] is determined to keep her out of harm's way.

The special effects are pretty ... Read More
