I first saw this movie when I was a little kid and enjoyed it immensely. Now that I am an adult,if anything I enjoy it more.It is the story of a group of adventurers who capture animals for zoos,a job desription that is pretty much extinct in the 21st century.John Wayne does his usual bang-up job as the leader with the delicious Elsa Martinelli(the reason why I enjoy the movie even more now)as his love interest. The co-stars include Hardy Krueger,Red Buttons and Wayne's often used friend,Bruce Cabot. The story is very episodic, but, laced with humor and action and a bit of romance,it never lags and holds your interest from the opening scene to the last. This is quite simply one of the most fun movies the Duke ever filmed. If you are looking for some fun time spent in front of the TV,this is a great ... Having read the book and seen this movie in its earlier, original DVD release (a bargain, still, for those not wanting to shell out for this new edition), I knew what to expect in the way of story. This new transfer is, however, much more better, especially in its offering a higher-definition image with a subtler, more delineated grey scale - which is critical to the enjoyment of any well-made B&W movie. What really makes the Criterion edition so valuable are the extras included on Disk 2. First, there's a quite informative and candid interview with le Carre himself - in which he offers some revealing memories of the movie's casting, shooting, and on-set experiences as well as some criticisms of the final result. He is especially revealing about Martin Ritt, the director, an old lefty who was blacklisted ... Read More

Actually, I watched this movie because I was so fascinated by Dorothy Dell, who starred as "Bangles Carson," a tough gambler's girlfriend and nightclub singer. It is hard to believe that Dell was only nineteen years old when she made this film; she died two weeks after the film's release in a horrific nighttime car accident. But she looks and acts much, much older...she was beautiful, talented, and had an extremely promising future.

Oh, yes...and Shirley Temple? Well, I think this was the best role she ever did. She was so little (five years old) and so gifted and natural in this role...her later movies were too sugary for my taste! She and Dell and Adoph Menjou had marvelous chemistry together in this film, although Menjou was terrified of Temple's screen presence and knew she was stealing the ... Read More

It's unfortunate that the entirety of this film does not survive, since it seems like it could have had a lot more substance and a better-developed plot if the missing sections were intact. Here we see the first reel, featherweight boxer Stan up against a big burly opponent (the great character actor Noah Young). Stan knocks him cold in the first round, but things don't go so nicely in the following round. Ollie, his manager, knows that something has to be done to bring in the money and to make sure that Stan gets out of the ring before he has another chance to be slaughtered. And this is the section that is lost. What we don't see is Ollie taking out an insurance policy on Stan so that they'll stand to collect a lot of money if he gets injured. Ollie also arranges for Stan to conveniently get injured, ... Read More

VHS : The Miracle Woman (Restored)
That's Barbara Stanwyck, very young & desirable in this 1931 forgotten little movie that I understand costs quite bit for its day. She's the daughter of a preacher who has just been fired & immediately dies. She gives the hypocrites in the congregation a firery sermon in his place. She leaves town, vowing vengence with a shady manager in tow. Soon she is famous & wealthy as Florence "Faith" Fallon an evagelist & healer. She has become what she had cursed the congregation for. She's knows she's a phony. But then she has a success of sorts. A young avaitor, (David Manners) blinded by the war, is despondent & on the verge of suicide. He hears her broadcast & doesn't follow through. He seeks her out & they develop a friendship. In a series of meetings, mostly in his apartment, they fall in ... Read More

This two-reeler begins in the middle of the night. Stan is suffering from a toothache, and his problem is keeping Ollie up as well. Nothing he does helps him, but predictably makes things even worse. All of the commotion in their room brings short-tempered landlord Charley Hall storming in, and the boys have a violent altercation with him that sends him off fuming. Since everything has tried and failed, there seems no recourse but to go to the dentist. (The scene in the dentist's office was later remade in their first feature film, 1931's 'Pardon Us.') Things don't look good here either, since all of the patients are being carried out on stretchers. Stan resists going in, but is dragged there anyway. He's terrified of having the tooth pulled, and to calm him, Ollie says he'll show him how easy it is. Unfortunately, ... Read More

This little gem of a movie is getting harder and harder to find. It is almost 70 years old. All of the stars in this film may have been well known then but they, except for Jack Benny, are almost all unknown to viewers today.

The story is centered around a well known actress and a thief that fall in love on the cruise. She has connections to a crime boss and is trying to protect her criminal brother from the same crime boss he owes money to. The thief begins by stealing on board the boat and swindles
and steals from just about everybody he sees along with his partner who works on ship as a steward. A police detective on vacation begins to figure what the thief is up to and later on attempts to solve the murder of the crime boss. In the end all the loose ends are tied up and the thief and the actress resolve ... Read More
