I can't begin to tell you how this movie affected me when I saw it. Being an adolescent when I saw this made me believe that that was what true love really was about. The music to this day sends chills through me. I think one of the other reviewers summed up all the psychological nuances in the film. I decided at that time I did not want my life to end up like, Brubaker or his wife's. I saw the film for love. When He made it on the plane it was like yes this is how life should be! I loved the show, loved the music. Catherine was my very first crush and I would follow her anywhere. I have tried to live my life like I belive Brubaker and Catherine did after they landed in Paris. Its a great period movie but it says so much that is still applicable to life in the 21st century. Some things never ... Read More

LOVE this movie. Depicts male menopause to a T (no offense to the men-folk here, my dh loves it, too.) It's very well done, builds tension well, and has many interesting characters.

How to rate "A Mouse and His Child"? I first became aware of this film in the late 1970s, and actually took a female date to it. Imagine, taking a date to an animated film! It didn't pan out date-wise, but the film was and is astounding ... philosophically astute, almost heart-breaking, keen in its analysis of search and redemption, familial, paternal, and more. It's a commentary on unfettered capitalism, individualism, friendship, internecine (and inter-species) warfare and prejudice. And friendship.

Plot: A "mouse" (father) and "child" (son) are the two parts of a single small wind-up toy, which must be wound up by means of a key in the father's back. After having been unboxed, they discover themselves in a toy shop where they befriend a toy elephant and toy seal. ("Papa, where are we? ... Read More

Yes! I agree with the Coen Bros references. This is a wonderful film. The Time Out film guide rightly says that this film defines the term 'offbeat'. I found myself chuckling every few minutes. Caan was pumping out some true classics in his peak (71-74) and here you really appeaciate the nuances of the role. Look at the way he reacts to Kellerman's 'Crazy chick' - perfect! But the real star here is the writer W.D.Richter. I see from IMDB that he hasn't had a film out in over 5 years. Why? He's a bloody genius!

For its time, this was an entertaining comedy with an anti-war message that was loved for its ability to express the feelings of most Americans at the time on the Vietnam War. This is a film about the Korean War only in name but as you will see throughout, the de facto Vietnam theme is prevalent throughout sometimes subtly but even blatantly for instance in the downtown "Korea" scene where the women are all wearing Vietnamese-style conical hats which is not indigenous to Korea.

Overall, this comedy doesn't age well for modern viewers although its anti-war message is very clear and resonates even today. Some parts are simply boring and I especially found the whole football scene totally sleep-worthy and I didn't see how it added to the overall theme unless it's a way to show how Americans try ... Memo to whomever owns the copyright for Robert Altman's movies: You must do a restoration job and release the DVD all over again. I realize that amazon.com does not list a Brewster McCloud DVD or sell it. I am writing this for the benefit of people who have bought the DVD from the "animefirst.com" web site. I did that, and I am missing the fine detail that I vividly recall seeing in previous viewings in the theater and on VHS cassette.

Every reviewer on this page is reviewing that videocassette version of Brewster McCloud. I don't see any complaints about the fine detail. So I am chiming in here to help animefirst customers who expect a DVD that is on a par with MASH, Nashville and other Robert Altman classics. Animefirst either does not display customer reviews, or it does not display them as ... Read More

VHS : Not for Ourselves Alone - The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony
It would be totally inadequate for this reviewer to say that NOT FOR OURSELVES ALONE:The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony is simply a "must-see","well done","moving","dramatic","compelling"etc.etc. documentary of the two forgers of the early Woman's Suffrage Movement. This Ken and Paul Burns treatise has been so carefully, sensitively and lovingly handled, crafted and assembled that I was moved to anger, incredulity, sympathy, action and finally to just good ol'tears!
NOT FOR OURSELVES ALONE tells in vivid detail, based upon the enormous source material and writings and correspondence of the two amazing women of the 19th -century,Cady Stanton and Anthony, who almost in a battle alone, fought tirelessly for the equality and dignity and rights of all women to receive and exercise their rights ... On a back shelf in a hippie style book store i came accross this film. Reading the back of the box sparked my curiousity. Yes, this movie has some very funny moments, but i believe there to be some strong messages in this film about being alone, and how vulnerable we are to be needed in the world. All three main characters are alone in life, and they meet many bizarre characters on their road trip that are as alone and troubled as they are. I won't spoil anything, but there is a nerdy small town teenager who shows up in the film who has a horribley funny line about 'Grape Fruits'. This is a rare film, and probably will never get the recognition it deserves.
