My first child (now 16) wore this video out and LOVED it! So, i'm replacing it with a DVD for my younger one and the one with autism. Awesome family classic in my opinion! Funny! And it has a happy ending! Love Michael J Fox, Sally Field & Don Ameche voices.... PERFECT casting!

VHS : A Star Is Born
I was a teenager when this came out and everyone went to see it. I was not very critical then, but remember thinking that this was nauseating. Barbra Streisand is undeniably talented but incapable of setting her vanity aside in the interest of making a decent movie. And the camera is cruel. She's too ugly to have ever been convincing as an object of passionate desire in any movie. On stage at a distance, she could get away with it. In a movie like Funny Girl, where the guy was interested in her earning potential (and the director kept her monumental ego under control), her looks were not a hindrance. Her version of "A Star is Born" is simply a ridiculous waste of time. Don't like those kinds of songs, either, though I know some people do.

I've seen this several times and finally purchased the videotape. This movie has a wonderful score, and beautiful scenery, but I think anyone can relate to the portrayal of people who have outgrown their previous identities and have to refind themselves. Steveston in the film is a little bit unbelievable, with everyone so helpful and kind, leaving only the principles (Sally Field, Judy Davis and Carly Pope) to battle their dysfunctional selves, so that is rather unrealistic, but the film is so seductive in its message of healing and hope, that you can overlook that. BTW, the book the movie is based on has a very different and not pleasant ending. I think the movie is better.

VHS : Way West
The one thing I have learned about the so-called "professional" reviewers of films is that they have built in prejudices and ideas just like the rest of us...so I really do not pay that much attention to a review, good or bad. As for The Way West" I have seen this film at least twice. I enjoyed it both times. While I like The Big Sky better, that is not to say I did not enjoy this film. Probably the one negative I have is Sally Fields portraying a young tramp who causes problems for others along the way. But then I was never a Sally Fields fan. I have nothing personal against her, but I liked other actresses much better. I did enjoy watching Robert Mitchum, Richard Widmark and Kirk Douglas; I consider all of them to be great actors, so what is not to like? And I liked Lola Albright's performance ... Read More

VHS : The End (1978)
I remember my parent's taking my brother, sister, and I as kids to see this movie. (A LONG time ago)
I found it hilarious as a child, and watched it several times as an adolescent on cable. I ordered it because I remember Dom DeLuise being SO GREAT as Sonny's best INSANE friend trying to help him kill himself. Throughout the years my family has kept phrases from this movie alive. Such as "Your right Sonny, it's not high enough!" Or we mimic Burt at the end of the movie bargaining with God. The closer he gets to shore the more he rescinds or minimizes his promises to Him.
Without Dom, this movie would have been mediocre to BAD. But with him in it, I would still give it 5 stars. When he is introducing himself to Sonny (who thinks he's a doctor) and stands up propping his leg in the chair and while flashing ... Read More

Anti-establishment late '70s truckin' fun movie. Great flick with truckin', hot rods and CB radio-speak. A magnificant late '70s American movie. Great cast. Burt is perfect, as is Jackie Gleason as the ultimate redneck sheriff. (Jerry Reed is easy to ignore, but SHINED.) Sally Field shined as well. It's easy to see how Burt and Sally hooked up after this one in real life. The chemistry showed in the movie and helped make it real. Very funny. You need to watch it for what it's worth. They were'nt trying for an Oscar. (Thank goodness.) If you like a simple plot with car-chase action, you will LOVE this movie.
