Is only for tangueros - it illustrates a one woman obsession
with the dance. Hence it's quite limited and you must
be very interested in Tango/Milonga to get anything from it.

VHS : The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Fellowship of the Ring is a good representation of Tolkien's original work, but it is also a very well-made movie. Just like Tolkien's book, The Lord of the Rings, has long been the standard to which most fantasy books are compared, I believe fantasy movies will be held against the movie trilogy for many years to come. (Be aware that this review may contain some SPOILERS).

One of the biggest criticisms I see about the movie is some of the changes made from the book. Yes, there is much more in Tolkien's book than is in the movie, but can it really be helped? For the most part the movie stays very faithful to the book. Yes, parts were left out (like the character of Tom Bombadil), but most of this was done so the immense work could fit into a movie. Along with a terrific cast this is a fun movie from the 1980s with decent clothes and music that doesn't age it badly. Backdrops are of Chicago and you see a couple scenes that Chicagoans will know like the loop, and the Picasso sculpture in the Civic Center Plaza. Several of the cast were kids then and have now grown including Makepeace, Baldwin, and Dillon. Be sure to keep an eye peeled for a young Jennifer Beals of "Flash Dance", not listed in the credits. This is a story about a new kid that is bullied for lunch money by a group of locals. In comes a very large and intimidating kid with stories of murder and mayhem that all the kids are afraid of but the new kid. He immediately approaches this large kid with a questionable past and ask him to be his bodyguard. It takes some convincing but he finally agrees. ... Read More

The nuns in this flick are not very bad. They are plenty stupid, but not very sinful. The real evil in this film is the holy ineptitude with which it was produced. The only significantly bad people in the story, the abbess and the principal inquisitor, are merely crazy. Nunsploitation is supposed to be about sex, and there just is not much in this movie; what there is looks oafish and blaze'. The plot is trivial and at the same time too fantastic for anyone to suspend even a moment of disbelief. It pretends to a kind of Romeo and Juliet theme, but it is just a farce in comparison to even a high school play written by undereducated teens. The film could have been comic in this regard, but it is carried off so ineptly that it fails even a glint of value on that score too. All in all, it was a waste of money and ... Read More

Conan Doyle's famous adventure story has been filmed many times before. The most notable version is, of course, the silent version made in 1925 and its stop-motion animation of dinosaurs (by Willis H. O'Brien). Now if you're looking for something like a huge dinosaur walking in the jungle, you should avoid this one. Though this was released only one year before "Jurassic Park," the best special effects of this low-budget film is rubber puppets someone holding from under.

That does not mean `The Lost World" (1992) is a joyless ride. Actually this is a pretty good, old-fashioned adventure film that you might have seen in the 1960s and thanks to the capable cast who knows what they are doing and the beautiful scenery, this film is a pretty enjoyable one. Prolific Welsh actor John Rhys-Davies is cast as Professor Challenger, ... Read More
