Movie is long but it sure does give you a view of how poorly people were treated. It was great to see how their belief kept them strong

VHS : Somebody Up There Likes Me
Director Robert Wise helmed the great boxing movie The Set-Up , a work scathing in its depiction of the seamy side of the sport .Somebody Up There Like Me takes an altogether more positive view of the noble art and is a thorougly entertaining biopic about Rocky Graziano .Graziano is splendidly played by Paul Newman making his second picture ,after the debacle that was The Silver Chalice,a movie that could have strangled his screen career at birth ,so bad was it .
Rocky was born in the slums of New York ,the son of a boxer whose own career stalled through several losing bouts with the bottle .In and out of trouble with the law as a youth and into young manhood ,encompassing a strech in reform school ,a dishonourable discharge from the Army and a spell in Leavenworth .Rocky eventually finds ... VHS : Giant (2pc) (Ws Aniv)
"Giant" is a larger-than-life 1950s soap opera filled with all sorts of rivalries, oil derricks, class warfare, and cattle barons. Rock Hudson plays Jordan "Bick" Benedict who brings home an Easterner (Elizabeth Taylor) as his bride. Bick's sister, Luz, doesn't take none too kindly to new bride Leslie whereas ranch hand Jett Rink quite clearly does. Leslie herself is appalled that women are to be seen and not heard, and that no one seems the least perturbed that Mexican workers on the ranch live in squalid conditions.

This first half of "Giant" is very entertaining in the way that soap operas can be. The ranch, Reata, is expansive; the mansion they live in is a colossus. The performances are quite good, especially Mercedes McCambridge's tough, almost mannish sister, Luz. Everyone seems ... Read More

4.The Gene Krupa Story / Movie starring: Sal Mineo, Susan Kohner, James Darren, Susan Oliver, Yvonne Craig
directed by: Don Weis

VHS : The Gene Krupa Story / Movie
Sal Mineo plays big band drummer Gene Krupa from his early days playing in speakeasies to later fame with Jimmy Dorsey's orchestra, followed by his scandalous arrest on drug charges and subsequent black-listing. Mineo is outstanding as the dynamic drummer, capturing his wild, pounding style, stick-syncing to Krupa's actual playing. Handsome James Darren (Gidget) sings a few songs as Gene's stalwart pal and almost steals the show. Susan Kohner gives a strong performance as Gene's long-time girlfriend and future wife.

This bio pic is melodramatic and predictable and has the look of the fifties instead of the thirties, but it's still quite enjoyable thanks to the good actors and electrifying drum solos.

VHS : Private War of Major Benson
Charlton Heston plays a tough but sensitive Major who befriends a boy without a father. It is still one of my favorite movies and would enjoy seeing it on DVD. I believe not only the old but the young would see this as A Great movie. The compassion shown could enlighten all.

6.Cheyenne Autumn starring: Richard Widmark, Carroll Baker, Karl Malden, Sal Mineo, Dolores del Rio
directed by: John Ford
July 22, 1994
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Cheyenne Autumn
Well, there's good cheese and there's bad cheese--this was Cheeze Whiz. Sitting through it was an ordeal. The intent may have been good--i.e., John Ford's "apology" to the Indians--but other than that it was one bad Hollywood cliche after another. Richard Widmark, who can't act to save his life, plays a sort of prototype Oskar Schindler who risks his army career to go to bat for the Indians. Karl Malden plays a Prussian authoritarian sociopath, an easy villain. The Cheyenne themselves might have been humanized here if their leaders hadn't been played by stodgy, middle-aged white men with pointy noses and mall bangs. Ricardo Montalban is in mediocre form as usual, and Sal Mineo is, also as usual, an Italian-American version of Elvis. The only Indians with any dignity are the extras, who appear to be real Indians ... Read More

Sal Mineo was such a natural, brilliant & original
talent who was never truly appreciated during
his short lifetime, and who only got a few roles
that really gave a glimpse into what an awesomely
emotional & provocative actor he was!

I have been a fan of his since about 24 yrs ago,
when I first saw "Rebel Without A Cause" and
really paid attention to it!
Ever since then, I have compiled his
performances from "Giant", "Exodus",
"The Gene Krupa Story",
"Somebody Up There Likes Me",and long
for the day when his other groundbreaking performance
in "Who Killed Teddy Bear" will be released to DVD!

A freind told me about this movie "Dino" that he did
back in his hey-dey of the mid to late 50's and early ... Read More

VHS : The Greatest Story Ever Told
The Greatest Story ever told

We wanted to own this movie so we can share it with young adults that are in the process of understanding and defining their religious belifs.

While rather lengthy, this George Stevens directed film provides an in depth view into the life of Jesus Christ, touching on all aspects of the story. The cast of characters is simply superb and we found ourselves trying to identify the cameo appearance of our favorites, including John Wayne, Max von Sydow, Pat Boone, Charlton Heston, Martin Landau, Angela Lansbury, David McCallum, Sidney Poitier and Telly Savallas.

The film delves into the life of Christ with great reverence and respect, recreating his path through life, crucifixion and resurrection. The scenes are filmed in Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah with Pyramid ... Read More
