VHS : Student Prince (1954)
I was dragged to this movie as a young boy. What young man wants to see a movie with a singing prince and a love story? It didn't take long for me to enjoy the story of male bonding by singing and drinking in the beer garden soon to be followed by a sword fight.
I can almost imagine myself serenading the beautiful and sexy barmaid (Ann Bylthe), especially with the flawless voice from GOD(Mario Lanza) lip-synced to near perfection by the prince(Edmund Purdom).
All this plus an arrogant jerk is shown the error of his ways. Oh yeah, and the love story is classic.
With 20-20 hindsight it's obvious that losing Lanza, the actor, was a stroke of luck.

VHS : Christmas in Connecticut
Bad direction keeps this movie from being good. In fact, even Barbara Stanwyck comes off looking awkward in some scenes. But she can never be truly bad. Her presence and a great supporting cast keep me watching this one again and again: (the usually weird) Sydney Greenstreet feels just enough out of place to be really fun, (the often overly cute) S. Z. Sakall gets to deliver all the sardonic jabs that keep the movie from being too sweet, and (the always wonderful) Una O'Connor is, well, just wonderful.

The one-reel extra, A Star in the Night, is the kind of pure Christmas schmaltz that will have any true holiday believers bawling on cue. And that alone is worth the price of purchase.

VHS : Casablanca (Aniv B&W)
With the new Blu-Ray versions of old classics, it may be time for Amazon to rethink how it publishes their reviews, normally one of the things I like most about their store!
When I heard Casablanca was coming out in Blu-Ray, my first thought was, "I wonder if Blu-Ray has anything to offer to an old Black and White film, or is it just a marketing ploy?"
So, I go to Amazon, look up the BLU-RAY VERSION of Casablanca, and find 536 reviews telling me that Casablanca is one of the best movies of all times.
Great! I know that! What I want to know is, does the Blu-Ray edition offer me any viewing advantages over my current DVD of this movie?
How about limiting the reviews to only those who can add something of value to the specific edition being evaluated. Otherwise, with all the new ... Read More

Charleston! Charleston! A group of kids have discovered their parents' childhood belongings including clothes and records. Their great uncle (S. Z. Sakall) is aghast that they would mock the 1920s and does his best to portray the era in a more favorable light.

Nanette Carter (Doris Day) is a dancer who yearns to be on the stage, but everyone recommends more training. She dutifully complies. That is, until she is offered the lead role in a show if she can sponsor it as well. She agrees, but her rich uncle is reluctant to give her the money because the stock market has just crashed. They make a bet; if she can say "No" to every question asked of her for two whole days, she can have the money for the show. It isn't an easy undertaking, especially since she is in love (Gordon MacRae). Also ... Read More

When will MGM get their finger out and release "RICH YOUNG & PRETTY" and "SMALL TOWN GIRL" on DVD, after all this is the 21st century, we now have a better viewing medium than VHS tapes.

These would have to be two of the least known but best loved movies that came out of the '50's.

For those that havent yet seen these movies, beg borrow or steal them to see great dancing, fantastic singing, and so so acting, but are must have in any collection.

VHS : Never Say Goodbye
This is one of the most unforgetable films I have ever watched and I love classic films. I first saw this about 20 years ago and have been searching to purchase it ever since. Unfortunatly I thought the mother was played by Ingrid Bergman which is why it took so long to find it. Hope to have a copy soon. This is a must for anyone who enjoys the classics.

VHS : Montana (1950)
"Montana Territory...1879...where cattle was king...where the law was a gun...and the men who drove the great herds up from Texas made the rules. They were hard men...they had to be hard to keep alive..." And not just the men. Cattle queen Maria Singleton (Alexis Smith) is not about to let a bunch of stinkin' sheep onto prime cattle land. She and Rod Ackroyd (Douglas Kennedy), equally prejudiced against mutton, run things in this section of Montana Territory. It's not going to be easy or pleasant when Morgan Lane (Errol Flynn) shows up on horseback with a lot of sheep following him. All he wants is a chance to prove that cattle and sheep and share the same land profitably. While he's trying to do this, sometimes with humor, sometimes with his fists, men will die, the sneaky Ackroyd will get his, a great stampede will take place ... Read More
