VHS : Harold & Maude (Aniv)
"Harold and Maude" is a romantic, darkly comic fantasy about two eccentric souls who briefly find in each other love and companionship. Young Harold is obsessed with death, attending funerals and staging suicide-themed vignettes starring none other than himself. Mother tries to cure him of his eccentricities by finding a computer date for him; Uncle feels the military will shape him up. A Freudian psychiatrist offers counsel as does a lecherous priest. All to no avail. Harold, pale and a little creased around the mouth, is a lonely young misfit.

Enter Maude, an eccentric old lady closing in on her eightieth birthday, lover of life, open to new experiences, not giving a darn what anyone thinks of her, not caring a fig for society's rules. She meets Harold when attending ... Read More

VHS : Action in the North Atlantic
Despite plenty of wartime propaganda and the usual amount of clichés and other staples of WWII action melodramas, ACTION IN THE NORTH Atlantic is given a boost by some of the best staged action scenes ever featured in a Warner Bros. movie of that era.

The realism is startling considering that special effects then included no computer engineering. The script is basically the story of U.S. Merchant Marine survivors of a battle determined to sink the ship that ruthlessly cut into their lifeboat. The climax has them getting their revenge on the Germans after a fierce battle that concludes with the Americans and their farewell ceremonies to shipmates killed during battle. Bogart is given some flag-waving lines to read and the film concludes with a commentary using FDR's voice to salute the Merchant ... Read More

VHS : Voyage of the Rock Aliens
A good Pia Zadora film is truly a contradiction in terms. But even at their trashy self-promoting worst (BUTTERFLY, FAKE OUT, THE LONELY LADY), they never scaled the queasy heights that 'VOYAGE OF THE ROCK ALIENS' reaches with its desperate last-ditch attempts to showcase Pia's ...for lack of a better word... talent.

I have loved this movie for years. I love Glenn Close in this movie so much. A total departure for Fatal Attraction that's for sure. I love the story line and the relationship between Mandy Patinkin and GC. It's very cute. Can't wait for this to come out on DVD.

VHS : Edge of Darkness
1943's "Edge of Darkness" portrays the acute plight of a small Norwegian village trapped under the thumb of brutal Nazi occupation during the Second World War. The presentation by veteran director Lewis Milestone is especially poignant; modern viewers must remember that the liberation of Norway was still an uncertain two years off when the movie was released.

Errol Flynn leads in an understated but solid performance as an ordinary and underachieving fisherman who is forced by circumstances to mature and become the leader of the local resistance. Walter Huston and Ruth Gordon turn in strong supporting roles as the brave town doctor and his wife. Ann Sheridan plays Flynn's love-interest, who runs afoul of the occupying troops and exacts a terrible revenge.

This movie is noteworthy for its fully developed ... Read More
