Perhaps one of his best films, Chance the Gardiner (Sellers) delivers a master performance for any viewer...of course the film is dryer than a pair of old ladies on a golf course but the episodes that take place in the film are sure to please any audience!

Growing up, I used to watch this movie every time it came on Disney. Until 2003 it had never been released for retail purchase. I looked for it for years, and was thrilled when they finally started releasing some of the Grable classics. It's a great musical and the songs will stick with you forever. I've recently heard rumors that it is going to be released on DVD sometime in 2008.

this is a fantastic movie. it's campy and fun and very positive. this movie is a well known and much loved classic. it's entertaining for adults and appropriate for kids (if you're familiar with john waters and have some reservations) my preteen daughter showed it to her friends at her birthday party, and all the girls got up to try out the dances and giggled their heads off. how anyone could even think of comparing it to the travolta crap is beyond me, let alone like the other one better. this is the movie that started the whole thing. the broadway play was ripped off from this movie, and that other version is ripped off from the broadway play. this version is better in every respect. better cast, better writing, better costumes, better music. ricki lake is awesome.

O.K. first a general comment:
Can someone please explain to me why so many people refer to this film as "dated" to put it down...
It was made in 1929... Thank you to the reviewer who pointed this out!
If you want something more up to date, go rent "The Terminator" (!)
Back in 1929 things were rather... 1929s'ish... (errrrrrr... duh...)
That said, actually one reason the film is so relevant today is because of just how ahead of its time it was...
Basically it was the first all talkie musical... it also had a colorized sequence (now lost), and was quite racy...
Sure... it lacks the smooth Lush technical perfectionism of the G-Rated MGM musical greats that would follow...
and has some strange quirks, some almost B-movie 50's sexploitationish... though ... Read More

I'm going to yell SPOILERS right off the bat, just in case anyone deems my breakdown of this film to be ruining the surprise for anyone.

I want to say that when I first saw this movie I really loved it; in fact it was my favorite Hitchcock film at the time. I thought that it was suspenseful and chilling and hit all the right notes. Sadly, I was so enthralled with the film that I decided to seek out the novel, written by Patricia Highsmith. Once I read the novel my opinion of the film was drastically altered and I had to watch the film yet again. The second viewing was far inferior to the first, for I realized that Hitchcock had not presented an accurate and respectful representation of Highsmith's novel.

Now I have raised kain with regard to film adaptations before (see my ranting on ... Read More

What a wonderful Socking stuffer! I had seen this movie on tv a few years ago and really enjoyed the down to earth way they explained about the Christmas season making it an uniquely warm and down to earth story about Santa. I have bought alot this movie and have stuck them in stockings and given them as gifts. Great to watch with your kids. If you have not seen this you will be sad that you have missed it. This was a delightful little story of "Santa" and his helper; how he visited the new world for the first time and how he became who he is today. There are lots of ways the writers of this film could have went with it but in my opinion they picked the best by staying with the true values of Christmas.

The Movie
This movie has obviously been influenced by Singing in the Rain, which isn't a bad thing. It takes the formula without of course the musical and runs with it 2 guys one gal the main guy falls for the girl she falls for him and yes it even rains on them go figure......lol. It's a story of a writer Christopher Madden who rights a book the book is bought to be made a movie. She boards a train and bam there the duke. From there the fun begins. This movie shows the lighter side of the duke which is always fun to watch.

The Video:
Made in 1944 it is black and white full frame. It's nothing spectacular. It could use a cleaning, but it watch able.

The Audio
Presented in 1.0 mono so it's and old movie that's not been updated.
