Excellent performance by all the actors and opera singers. It was a very good idea to transport the classic opera into a movies version. This adaptation is not new, nevertheless, is a masterpiece for all times. Congratulations !

VHS : Puccini - Tosca
Buy this video for Domingo and Raimondi. They are fabulous! Catherine Malfitano, I thought, wasn't so great. She sang pretty well, but I've heard better Tosca's than she. My biggest complaint with her is her extremely exaggerated facial expressions. She seems to be going cross-eyed in "vissi d'arte". They are frequent, annoying and just serve to ruin the wonderful atmosphere that Domingo and Raimondi have created.
Aside from her, there is some very strange blue lighting at the end of act 2 that is supposed to be darkness, but only covers half the room, leaving the bottom half dark and blue and the upper half bright and sunny. But Domingo and Raimondi are very good.

Although the colors are a bid faded, this is a beautifully shot movie. The scenery is very pleasing, and the acting is superb. The real downfall of the film is the sound. It's as if they were singing into tin cans to burn the sound onto records. At times, it's almost acceptable, then something happens and it's horrible again. This really is a pity, because with good sound this would truly be an excellent, cinematic opera production.

If this is the Decca CD. Look else where. After trying 3 of them, having the same problem with Act 2. I finally just bought a VHS tape, which works and sounds great.

This video was a big disappointment to me. The singers were good, but the rest is not good at all. I wanted this video mainly to see Ruggero Raimondi as Count Almaviva, but there were problems with his singing. He sounded very weak in this video probably because he is older in this than he is in the others that he is in. Heinz Zednik also wasn't a very good Basilio in this production. He seemed very strange, & not at all like he was as Monostatos in The Magic Flute. Most of the other characters were a little better, but there were lots of other problems in this video. Two really good arias are omitted, there is only one intermission, & to top it all off, there are no subtitles! Instead of subtitles there is a book with translations in English, German, & French that you have to stare at the whole ... Read More

This video is part of the "My Favorite Opera" series, each of which follows a different opera singer through the preparations and rehearsals for their favorite opera. This installment features Ruggero Raimondi as he prepares to perform the title role in Don Giovanni. It provides a very interesting look at the planning stages of the performace as well as some background material on the singer. Included are discussions with Riccardo Chailly and rehearsal footage. Other performers in the video are Jane Eaglen, Daniela Dessi and Alessandro Corbelli. If you enjoy opera and would like a peek behind the scenes, you might like this video.
