VHS : I Remember Mama (1948)
I watched this movie with my 17 year old daughter. We both found it very touching and relevant even though it is dated. Irene Dunne is wonderful as the Mama.

VHS : Unfaithfully Yours
A cinema technique in advance of its time. Head and shoulders above its more recent remake. Harrison never got his just due for his outstanding comedic efforts. Rue de Valle and other period character actors make this absolutely worthwhile to own for any Preston Sturges fan.

VHS : Father Was a Fullback
We loved it and laughed all the way through it. I hope a real coach
doesn't have to go through all the antics that Fred MacMurray went
through. You have to like Fred MacMurray to really appreciate
this movie. I guess what made us laugh most were the teens. Our
daughter was the same way. I wasn't sure either of us would live
through those times.

VHS : Beautiful Blonde From Bashful Bend
The legend goes something like this: After Judy Garland dropped out of Annie Get Your Gun, MGM called Zanuck, head of 20th Century Fox, and asked if he would loan out Betty Grable to replace her. After thinking about it over the weekend, Zanuck called Mayer back and said, "Why the hell should I loan out my golden girl when I've got a better property to star her in?" The better property? The Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend! Despite starring Hollywood's number one female (Grable was on the Top 10 Box Office list for 10 consecutive years) and being written and directed by one of the best in the business, Preston Sturges (in his autobiography Sturges writes that this was a misfire, and that Betty Grable was so great to work with and such an excellent comedienne she deserved much better) the picture ... Okay, Sonia Henie may not be the best actress ever, but I think she does a plenty adequate job here. After all, she's playing a midwest school teacher who is caught unawares that she has been entered into a nation-wide talent search for "The Girl of the North". Given this is the role she's playing, the role of a school teacher who is suddenly thrust into the limelight, what kind of acting experience do you need? I felt her portrayal was realistic! I mean, one day you're a school teacher, the next day, your acting in movies? Of course you are going to be awkward, not to mention scared out of your wits.

Ty was just outstanding. He was funny, charming, and a bit of Cyrnao De Bergerac thrown in (when he's writing love songs for the other guy to sing to the girl who he loves).

A terrific comedy for the whole family. It takes place in the 1940s but the story and acting is superb. A great addition to any DVD library!

This is a great, lighthearted, fun movie! For a contemporary, younger generation, it's probably just too much. But the generation for whom this movie was made, a generation that went thru a war that just killed 60 plus million poeple world wide, it was a simple, fun-loving, fresh, happy, 'the-future-did-look-brighter-and-new-days-were-coming' type of movie. It touches a wonderfully simple sense of love enough times to leave you in a better frame of mind once you have finished the last moments of the film.

VHS : The Sin of Harold Diddlebock
First I've been obsessed with this film since the first time I saw it convulsing, and I mean convulsing with laughter. It's not funny all the way through but when it is funny it's FUNNY!

Second, from a historical perspective it's very interesting. The first 15 minutes is a recycled silent film, which transitions to Mr. Lloyds first talkie. So it bridges the era's.

Third how can you not see a film involving BOTH Sturges AND Lloyd? Not to mention the cream of the crop of supporting character actors. Conlin was never better, he's a great guy but you don't want to trust him one inch! The plot line is so inventive and outrageous you'll never ever guess what is coming next!

Fourth, like all Lloyd and most of Sturges this is a film with it's morals completely out for the average ... Read More
