As much as I'd like to think that my debate career was on the same line as College football quarterback, some how it just didn't have the same impact. I viewed this movie the same way geologists viewed 10.0 and Astonomers viewed Armageddon. It was pretty laughable. Knowing that Tom Miller, UCLA Debate coach, was the consultant for this movie explains it all. I truly believe that this movie expresses how he views himself

VHS : All That Jazz
Bob Fosse's thinly-veiled autobiographical homage is everything a movie musical should be -- lively, tuneful, funny and even poignant.

With a cast which includes the wonderfully sexy Roy Scheider of Jaws (Widescreen Anniversary Collector's Edition) fame, Fosse acolytes Ann Reinking and Ben Vereen, and a fabulous pre-plastic surgery Jessica Lange as the gorgeous, ever-present Angel of Death, this musical story of a genius Broadway director with a death-wish, is nothing short of mesmerizing.

The story follows Fosse's own life story closely enough to be almost eerie -- even foreshadowing his ultimate demise from heart failure at an out-of-town new play try-out in Washington, D.C., which happened years after this movie was released. But even if it didn't, the movie stands on its own ... Read More

VHS : Still of the Night
This is a good thriller with lots of creepy touches. Roy Scheider is a recently divorced Manhattan psychiatrist. One of his patients is murdered and both the police and the victim's beautiful girlfriend (Meryl Streep) who seems to be the top suspect contact him. There is an immediate romantic attraction between Scheider and Streep and Scheider attempts to solve the murder using information the deceased man revealed to him during his twice weekly appointments. The most important info is a disturbing dream which is reenacted on screen in a memorable and truly chilling manner.

The deceased and Streep's character worked together at "Christen's" auction house specializing in antiquities and much of the film is set in this affluent world of high end art. Manhattan at night is used to good effect throughout ... Read More

THIS FILM FOCUSES ON JANE FONDA WHO IS COMPELLING AS A NEW YORK CALL GIRL. SHE GIVES THE ROLE AN EMOTIONAL AND DRAMATIC DEPTH NOT ALWAYS APPARENT IN THE SCREENPLAY AND DESERVEDLY TOOK THE ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST ACTRESS FOR HER PERFORMANCE. WHILE DONALD SUTHERLAND IS RATHER LESS LUGUBRIOUS AND MANNERED THAN USUAL(as the Private detective involved in a somewhat obsessive romance with Fonda), HE IS OVER-SHADOWED BY HIS CO-STAR. ALAN J.PAKULA'S OFTEN LANGUOROUS DIRECTION, TENDS TO ALLOW THE NARRATIVE TO SLACKEN FATALLY AT TIMES, THOUGH THERE IS NO DENYING THE OVERALL IMPACT OF THE MOVIE OR IT'S MORE-ADULT-THAN-USUAL APPROACH TO THE SUBJECT. JANE FONDA DOMINATES EVERY FRAME IN THIS FILM. HER PERFORMANCE LOOKS LIKE THE HIDDEN SIDES OF A PROSTITUTE'S LIFESTYLE; THE DREAMS, FEAR, SHAME AND LONLINESS OF HER WORLD ARE GRAPHICALLY ... I first saw this wonderful pastiche when it aired on PBS-TV in 1972. For the next several years, before it disappeared, I watched it as often as I could. I loved the freewheeling format with the six cast members, three black & three white, playing not only parts from Hansberry plays and remembrances but also the author herself, regardless of the actor's sex. Originally and lovingly compiled by Ms. Hansberry's ex-husband, Robert Nemirov, this TV version radiates with her love of theatre, words, socio-political action, and her compassionate, yet unsentimental, belief in her fellow human beings.

It's hard to single out any of the cast members since they are all so good - and it looked like they were having a ball working with each other on the TV adaptation! They need to be named, however: the late Claudia McNeil (so powerful in ... Read More

Conspiring monster bugs. . .ejaculating typewriters. . .inter-zone intrigue. . .
As a statement on addiction--interesting.
As a statement on writing--interesting.
As entertainment--duh?
Well-acted, well-made, but just, at times, so flat-out weird that it makes it, well--not enjoyable.
