VHS : Dark Command (Colorized)
After Wayne hit the jackpot in John Ford's groundbreaking Western STAGECOACH (1939) he was quickly reunited with his co-star Claire Trevor in ALLEGHENY UPRISING (1939) and again here in the DARK COMMAND (1940). Directed by Raoul Walsh, the man who incidentally gave young Michael Morrison his first starring role as a very young "John Wayne" in THE BIG TRAIL (1929) but it was a box office failure and Wayne was relegated to mainly B-Westerns until rescued by John Ford.

The fact based story is from the period starting just before the outbreak of the American Civil War depicting growing tensions on the Kansas Missouri border leading up to the infamous William Quantrill and his guerrillas burning down the town of Laurence, Kansas on August 21 1863. Based on the novel by W R Burnett Will ... Read More

I like Paul Hogan movies. They are uplifting with just the right amount of humor. This one is especially good, especially the part where Cuba Gooding Jr. is asked to suck the snake bite out of Paul's rear. The look on Cuba's face was priceless.

VHS : Martin (1978) Collector's Edition
This is probably one of George Romero's lesser known films, but I think it's one of his best(he has also said it's one of his favorites). It's about a young man who may or may not be a vampire, and his struggle to find a place for himself....
To say more would spoil the movie, which I won't do. I recommend tracking down Anchor Bay's 1999 release, which contains the original full-screen format of the film AND a John Amplas commentary. The 2004 Lion's Gate release is an artificially created widescreen(which actually removes more of the image), and no longer contains the Amplas commentary. Romero completists like me will probably just end up buying both versions. ;)

A group of riders come singing into town. Next we see a man in a buggy fleeing while being fired upon. The pursuers plant evidence to prove the man was a thief. Roy Rogers rides to the mine to investigate. The mine manager explains their policy against thieves. A letter to Roy says a writer will arrive to get information for a book. There is a surprise here! The boys sing a song boasting of their courage. [How many bullets in a six-shooter? Sixteen? The script plays with the western legends.] This "horse opera" mixes in singing and music with dramatic events. There is a secret to the San Angelo mine. It is being used to bring silver from a low-cost area to a high-price area; they are arbitrageurs and smugglers.

The padre asks for help to find a missing sentry. They search all night and find nothing. ... Read More

7.Flying Down to Rio starring: Dolores del Rio, Gene Raymond, Raul Roulien, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire

VHS : Flying Down to Rio
"Flying down to Rio" was a large scale, for studio RKO, pre-code musical starring the long forgotton very blonde Gene Raymond and the very beautiful dark Dolores Del Rio. The reason why the film is remembered at all is due, of course, to the presence of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in supporting roles.

Del Rio strikes poses rather than acts (she did reach stardom in silent films) and Raymond is a spritely but hammy leading man. Astaire has some good lines and Rogers is still in the snappy chorine phase of her career. Both had come from Broadway and it is not just their dancing which lauched their stardom together. Their personalities are much more dynamic and enjoyable than the leads. Rogers wears some very provocative clothes which would not have survived the censorship clamping down the following year. ... This is one of my favorites. It co-stars Gail Davis (later to become "Annie Oakley" on 1950's TV) and Clayton Moore (later to become the "Lone Ranger"). There is a wonderful sequence with Roy singing "On the Trail to Monterey" to a smiling Gail Davis. She even sings some harmony on it. Also, Andy Devine plays Roy's comical sidekick "Cookie". A must see for all Roy Rogers fans.
