VHS : Ivanhoe (1982)
For one whom has read the book, the movie captures the essence of the story - chivalry, romance, prejudice, and action. The actors in the movie did an excellent job. The character Ivanhoe was well portrayed and the relationship between Rebecca and Ivanhoe was well developed and believable. The movie addressed all the key activities within the book and succeeded in presenting the story without the audience feeling like the story was being rush.

The down side is that the movie may only be available in a VHS version. VHS does have a tendency to age and the clearness of the video and audio may be affected. It would be nice to have a DVD version of the movie available. Even though the movie may only be available in a VHS version -the positive aspects of the movie outlined above ... Read More

VHS : The Mission
I watched The Mission in a class that I'm currently taking about the Literature of Human Rights in Latin America. The Mission is about the colonial time in South America and shows the treatment of indigenous people and human rights. If we really focus on this movie as a human rights oriented, we could see how the Indians were being treated by the Europeans. They would capture, slave them, exploit them, and the Indians have no saying in the matter; for the Europeans they were like animals, they have no voice, they were nothing. So they could do as they wished with them.
On the other hand there were the Jesuits who saw them as humans who needed guidance, understanding, someone who needed to be converted into Christianity, trying to save them.
I see this movie as a way to create awareness ... Read More

This is a fantastic true story about a boy, his mother and his family who are caught up in a communist revolution. If anyone is in doubt about what a choke hold communism can put on a country, see this movie. After you see the movie you might even come to the conclusion that US Senator Joe McCarthy(American patriot, anti spy - anti communist Senator who was railroaded by congressional liberals and the press to the point that his name was made into an adjective in American dictionaries. They made an outcast of him and forced him to live the rest of his short life in disgrace. In 1995, upon the declassification of the CIA's "Verona project", this great man was proven right about everything he claimed including the people that he accused of being communist spies.) wasn't such a bad guy. This movie shows what the reality ... Read More

VHS : Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair
-This review pertains to the original DVD release, not the remastered edition-

In 1990, the final film in the BBC's Narnia series made its debut. The series, which consisted of four films, was based on The Chronicles of Narnia books by C.S. Lewis and remained very faithful to the source material. However, after having produced the first three films, the budget seems to have shrunk for this, the final installment. And for the first time it hurts the overall quality of the film. The Silver Chair is probably the weakest of the film series mainly because of the shortcuts that the filmmakers were forced to take to accommodate the low budget. Actors who appeared in previous episodes are recast in new roles, special effects are hurried and unconvincing, and the production design seems uninspired. All of this is unfortunate ... Read More

Please ignore all other reviews of this VHS to date (Jan 8, 2008). The reviews I've read must be of a different product. This is not a movie about Mahler, but a filming of a performance of his symphony no. 7 as conducted by Leonard Bernstein and performed by the Vienna Philharmonic (Wiener Philharmoniker). All 5 movements. I own most of this series on VHS. If you are a fan of Mahler and of Bernstein as I am, I think you will really enjoy this. I'm not sure if this has been put out on DVD, but the filming of the orchestra is very musical.

"...The screenplay was written by Edward Albee directed by Tony Richardson and star Rudolph Nureyev as Vaslav. Claude Jade as Romola
and Paul Scofield as Diagilev..."

When a Texas university buys a virtually new video--one that will probably play for "years"--and you know that the movie will be viewed
by a rather sophisticated audience--it makes you feel happy indeed.

In the opinion of this reviewer the film production is gorgeous.
It reminds the viewer of what it means to be human.

VHS : Wagner: The Complete Epic
No matter what one thinks of Burton's performance (he died a year later), this series should be seen if only for the chance of glimpsing the Olivier-Gielgud-Richardson triumvirate once more (they appeared together in "Richard III"). A nice touch would be to buy this set at amazon.co.uk and pay less than half the price!
