VHS : The Hairdresser's Husband
fascinating french movie. not overly sentimental and romantic, but at times erotic and lustful. a quiet, slow burning desire. when life was fulfilled and so satisfying, you might just want to end it right there. a movie clicked a core of your soul and would keep vibrating for the rest of your life.
glamorously beautiful hairdresser, a serene, warm, ravishing and passionate woman played so just-right by an excellent actress. the husband role was a bit too old but also a mature, likable and even lovable character played by a fantastic talent actor.
highly recommended.

I'm so glad I still own the 2000 Anchor Bay DVD release of this wonderful film, and now I'll never part with it. I was really looking forward to this 2008 Meridian Collection reissue with its promised new print, new soundtrack, and new extras. Imagine my disappointment--this is the most appallingly amateurish packaging of an important classic of world cinema that I've ever seen. The "new" picture transfer is grainy and indistinct, and the (monaural!) soundtrack is even worse. In this day and age of enhanced digital technology, I can't believe that anyone in their right mind would dare to present this mess to the DVD-buying public. Shame on them!

My advice to DIVA fans and newcomers: Move heaven and earth to snag a copy of the 2000 Anchor Bay version. You may have to search for ... Read More

VHS : Cyrano DE Bergerac
Cyrano has its romantic side, but unlike many French films, this one is safe for the whole family. The tragic romance of Cyrano and Roxanne is beautifully played out, with marvelous poetic pacing and the soaring spirit of Cyrano undaunted by any of his failures. I love the part when Cyrano says he's practically lived Don Quixote. Great film for guys and girls.

Barbet Schroeder's name is synonymous with More (1969) and La Vallee (1972), both of which featured Pink Floyd soundtracks, and Barfly (1987), starring Mickey Rourke. Set in Paris, Maîtresse, tells the unconventional love story of a petty thief, Olivier (Gérard Depardieu), who falls in love with his charming next-door neighbor, Ariane (Bulle Ogier), after discovering that she happens to be a professional dominatrix with her very own subterranean torture chamber filled with sex toys and torture devices, a casket, a dentist's chair, and even a prisoner. Relationships are never easy, and theirs is no exception. After they become lovers, Olivier is troubled by Ariane's deviant world and sadomasochistic dungeon downstairs, turning this romantic comedy into a lesson about sexual politics. When Maîtresse was first ... Read More
