This video is not usable. There is a lot of static/background noise; the picture rolls vertically on a continual basis. We tried the video on more than one machine, We do not have this problem with any other videos in our collection. We would like a replacement or a refund.

VHS : Court Martial of Billy Mitchell
An entertaining and well-made film with good acting especially Rod Steiger's performance. The ARTISAN DVD is below average; the 2.35:1 CinemaScope is not enhanced for 16:9 TVs, the color is just OK, the picture is not quite sharp, and there is some background noise.

VHS : On the Waterfront
On the Waterfront begins on a shipping dock. The weather is raw and cold. A man emerges from a small wooden shack. He's bundled in the clothes of a poor common man--a laborer. His eyes are to the ground; his hands are stuffed deep into his pockets. Several well-dressed men follow him out of the small shack; they're all smiles. One of these men reaches out to pat the laborer's shoulder: "You take it from here, slugger," he tells the laborer.

The laborer is Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando). The mob has a problem with Joey Doyle. Mobster Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) runs the docks and his problem is Joey Doyle's big mouth. Johnny orders his flunky, Terry Malloy, to set up Joey for the hit. Terry and Joey are friends and coworkers on the shipping docks. However, Terry's loyal to Johnny ... Read More

VHS : Jesus of Nazareth (3pc)
Very nice interpretation of the story of Christ's life. The blue eyes of actor Robert Powell is bright, dense and expresses both compassion and suffering borne by the Passion that contributes to the brightness of this beautiful film.

"Jesus of Nazareth" has converted one of my fellow class mate. I recommend it with that of "The Passion of Christ" by Mel Gibson.

VHS : Amityville Horror
The "behind the scenes" interviews are as interesting as the novel. You'll love Kidder's personality, off screen, as she describes some of the acting processes and her interaction with her co-stars. Brolin does a great job of recounting his early days. All in all, a good "edition" of the film to have. Now, on to the film:

The fact or fiction faction of this film has nothing to do with the film. Nor should the "truth" about what truly happened should be of no concern to the horror fan.

The facts about this film are:
1. Brolin's performance is flawless and riveting.
2. Kidder's performance is genuine and provoking.
3. Steiger's performance deserved an Academy nod.

The film begins it's haunting feel from the get-go. A great job ... Read More

VHS : Harder They Fall
Not bad, The Harder They Fall was the last film starring legendary actor Humphrey Bogart. Its a tale of corruption and greed in the sports and entertainment business, Humphrey Bogart stars as Eddie Willis a sports writer who is drawn into the ring of corruption when he agrees to promote an unknown fighter from South America named Toro Moreno (Mike Lane) who despite his huge size is a lousy fighter who cannot box but soon becomes heavy weight champion of the world allegedly through fixed fights. Beyond the obvious corruption in the fight game as the movie clearly depicts, the film is also about the danger of selling out doing something you know is wrong for money. Unfortunately Eddie Willis desperately needs the money since hes out of luck, there is also a fantastic performance by Rod Stieger as the crooked manager ... Read More

VHS : Al Capone
In this movie, Rod Steiger creates the definitive Al Capone. All other movie Capones pale in comparison. Steiger and Capone were made for each other. Both realize their essential natures in each other.

Steiger may not have captured the outward fact of Chicago's most notorious gangster. I have read complaints by Capone's relatives who said Capone was in reality soft-spoken and mild-mannered, not the coarse sawed-off-shotgun of a man that Steiger portrays. That may be true. My father knew Al Capone, and always amused my mother and me when he remembered him as being simply "amiable." But if Steiger doesn't capture the literal tone of the gangster, he captures his spirit - and more than that, he captures the spirit of the Roaring Twenties. He's loud, vulgar, violent, but always somehow poised on the edge of wanting ... Read More
