VHS : World War III
i watched this miniseries as a kid in the 80s and was blown away at the time. Decades later, i found it on Amazon and, still being in possession of a vcr, obtained the tapes and watched it recently. This is one of the greatest miniseries scripts ive ever seen in terms of the constant one-upmanship and escalating tension. A crack team of Soviet paratroopers has covertly invaded Alaska with the goal of seizing an important Alaskan oil pumping station in a KGB scheme to blackmail the us into rescinding its grain embargo. David Soul is the troubled Colonel, exiled to Alaska, who must redeem himself leading a ragtag band of national guardsmen against a superior armed force. He communicates with the President, played with fierce intelligence by Rock Hudson in one of his best roles (compare this ... Read More

VHS : All That Heaven Allows
"All That Heaven Allows" is a 1950s sudser that can be watched on a couple of levels. First and foremost is the entertainment value. Jane Wyman is so terrific playing widow Carrie Scott. Within the first twenty minutes of the movie, three different suitors move in on her. The most intriguing, and from the perfect 1950s standpoint, the most unconventional, is her landscaper, Ron Kirby. Ron is younger. Material wealth means nothing to him, preferring to spend his time with his trees, living Thoreau rather than just reading him. Carrie eventually gives in to temptation and the suburban milieu she skates over is in an uproar. Tongues wag, and her children are shamed: A gardener, Mom! Perish the thought! Let's get you a television instead! It's a soap opera, of course, but also, on a deeper level, ... Read More

I enjoyed the story and loved how a person can choose to change his life for the better. However, for Dr. Merrick to suddenly appear at a sanitarium in New Mexico, and then have a very nice operating room complete with viewing window that you might imagine finding in a large well equiped hospital was a little difficult to swallow. The nurse and companion, Nancy, suddenly became a scrub nurse and miraculously knew every instrument!! And then, to top it off, after a very long and difficult surgery, the patient was placed in a bed in a hotel-style room containing a huge curtained window with fresh air wafting through. There was no IV, no moniters, etc. etc. After such a surgery, the patient would be placed in a post op--critical care environment. I felt the script should have been tweaked enough in ... Read More

What is it all these people are praising? I saw nothing of the quality which they seem to see. Rock Hudson was ridiculous! James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor are too young to play their roles, no matter how much silver the make-up people spray into their hair. It was so long and boring. The blocking was clumsy and stilted. What else can I say? I could only get through one hour of this disaster. Academy Awards? Give me a break.

I liked the movie. I was in it when it was filmed at Beale AFB, CA
in 1963. I was a Security Policeman on the flight line and we, as
well as our aircrews and missle crews were used as background players.
SAC, with a little human dramatization, was pretty well portrayed with
the ORI (Operational Readiness Inspection) which typically hit about 2 AM
as a No Notice inspection by 15th Air Force.
When the end of the movie came and they showed a missle launch crew,
it was filmed at a Titan I site, and the launch crew and their dialogue
was real. They were not actors.
I would like to see this movie made into a DVD. I used to rent until
I got one that ruined my VCR after use by another renter who damaged the
tape and of ... Read More

VHS : Here Come the Nelsons
"Here Come the Nelsons" stars Ozzie, Harriet, Ricky and David as well as Rock Hudson, legendary screen heavy and TV producer Sheldon Leonard, Jim Backus ("Mister Magoo") and Gale Gordon ("Here's Lucy").

This movie is co-scripted by the great and tragic comedy writer William Davenport. Here Come the Nelsons gets off slowly but soon has enough plot twists to maintain interest until the hilarious finale.

On the way there's a rodeo with Ozzie riding a wild bronc, a visit to a carnival astrologer, an impromptu dance contest in Ozzie's living room and a holdup.

This is classic 50s family fare but not insipid. There's a fair amount of romantic tension and many clever plot twists, including the kidnapping of Ricky. The film is well-lit, directed and acted and highlights the unique ... Read More

VHS : Send Me No Flowers
After directing Doris Day in 1963's still-hilarious The Thrill of It All!, Norman Jewison showed similar comic sensibilities with this screwball 1964 marital farce complemented by a sharp screenplay by longtime veteran Julius Epstein. This one represents something of a departure in that Day and Rock Hudson, in their third and last pairing, play a married couple from the outset. As George and Judy Kimball, they are a happily married suburban couple hamstrung by his persistent hypochondria. Convinced that he is dying after a regular check-up, George spends the rest of the story preparing for what he thinks will be his imminent death, including setting up Judy with her next husband, a former suitor whom they literally run into at their country club.

Unlike the previous two films, Hudson actually dominates ... Read More

I was allowed into the theater to see this when I was 14, almost 15, and the lady at the ticket booth said, "Hmmmm....OK." My friend was just over 16, I think, so he might have been underage as well. Anyway, I recommend this movie for anyone who likes 1960's period pieces. Love the music, the sunny innocence mixed with naughty naughtiness, the tongue-in-cheek performances, the high school upskirts, Angie Dickinson. Just another movie that makes you wonder why it has not seen the digital light of day yet.
