1.Stepping Out starring: Liza Minelli, Jane Krakowski, Bill Irwin, Ellen Greene, Sheila McCarthy
directed by: Lewis Gilbert (II)
January 01, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Stepping Out
Liza Minelli is such a brilliantly expressive actor and dancer, that she can overcome any tired cliche that's thrown at her (starting with the title of this film), and this one has cliches that weren't even cliches in 1991. She's so great in every scene that the viewer forgets that the talents of Andrea Martin, for example, are wasted. Wasted. Shelley Winters gets a slightly better chance to show her skills, as the wizened, retired theatre exponent who nonetheless plays piano part-time for the troupe, almost *defiantly* lousy. (But at the big show, there she is in the orchestra pit!).
Yes, men are beasts throughout this early-era militant feminist flick. The only non-beast is the solitary xy-entity in the class, a sissified straight guy, badly acted and terrifically danced by Bill Irwin. ... Read More

VHS : The Stepfather
Well, I have to kick myself in the butt.. The Stepfather series is perhaps the best slasher series since the original psycho. Although pt 2 and 3 had been released on dvd, I hesitated on purchaseing them due to hoping the 1st movie would be released, which it never has. Now that I have waited, it looks like pt 2 and 3 are soon to be no longer avaliable on dvd... Does this mean that there will be a boxed set released with pt 1, 2, and 3 together? God I hope so. If this were so I would buy it without a doubt. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RELEASE ALL THREE STEPFATHER DVDS TOGETHER!

3.Little Match Girl starring: Maryedith Burrell, William Daniels, William B. Davis, Hallie Foote, Keshia Knight Pulliam

VHS : Giant Steps
This is one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. The makers of this movie should be ashamed of themselves for titling it after a great jazz album, Giant Steps by John Coltrane. This movie is poorly written and filled with inane dialogue--and it has a slew of bad actors. Billy Dee Williams (a good actor) really made a mistake with this turkey. He tries to channel the cool that came naturally to jazz musicians of the past but his performance is ridiculous and embarrassing. The only good thing about the movie is the few minutes of jazz that come all too infrequently.

I can see why this movie hasn't been released on DVD--it's just awful.

5.Distant Thunder starring: John Lithgow, Ralph Macchio, Kerrie Keane, Reb Brown, Janet Margolin
directed by: Rick Rosenthal

VHS : Distant Thunder
Speaking as a disabled vietnam vet with PTSD, I could identify 100% with Lithgow's character. A lot of this acting was wooden...but, that's how some of us are...wooden.

I think this movie leaves with more questions asked than answered. Some of this stuff was typical Hollywood cr*p. But, enough of it rang close to home. Not every namvet goes tripwire. Some integrate totally back into society. Some rejoin partially. Some not at all. This injury affects different people different ways. There is no blanket statement that tell you what it is...and what it is not. Each and every veteran no matter what war is affected by it some way. Directly or guilt by association, we all get tarred with the same brush.

For my generation of Vets, that war will never be over. But,I ... Read More

VHS : Intersection
Note: This will allude to some spoilers.

One reason to watch this film is to see the beautiful pairing of Gere and Stone. (See also Gere and Kaprisky in Breathless: a stunning couple in the prime of their youth.)

However, there is far more to this movie than a slick presentation. Stone's cool blonde beauty is a little too icy, making the flame of the warm redhead (Davidovich) too hard for Gere to resist.

Sally and Olivia are poised and dignified when they meet, which encourages respect for the characters and an interest in following their story.

The eventual train wreck of a car wreck is tough to watch. The director uses slow motion to good advantage. Tragic as Vincent's demise is, we get to see his vision where he ends up with the girl, and Sally ends up with ... Read More
