VHS : The Princess Bride
Let me say this first and foremost, my boyfriend told me about this movie while walking to the library one day. At first, I told him I didn't want to see it, but he insisted that I should give it a try and afterwards tell him how I felt about it. So, I said O.K. and borrowed it for the weekend. And there I was, sitting in the living room with my boyfriend, watching the Princess Bride. Robin Wright plays the serious, deadpan Princess Buttercup, Cary Elwes plays the poor, lame, non-acting farmer/pirate character, Westley, Chris Sarandon plays the very cruel and very pathetic prince Humperdink, and Billy Crystal plays the lovable Miracle Max. Now, I was very Surprised to see the late Andre the Giant in this film, he did a very good job being that this was his 1st movie debut. He made me laugh and ... Read More

This film represents a refreshing take on the comic book genre. Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson give great performances. Tonally, Unbreakable is excellent, although it does move slowly at times. This show let me know that M. Night was not a fluke. After seeing it, I was a Shyamalan fan.

The 2-Disc DVD has a lot of great extras, including some cool artwork. The best part is Shyamalan's directing. The movie feels like you are in a comic book. As a previous collector, I especially enjoyed this film and DVD. I don't know how anyone who likes comics could dislike it.

VHS : Denial (1991)
Two people stand at the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea. A young man holds a young woman close to him from behind her, their faces troubled. She urges them closer to the edge, and throws her weight forward, as if attempting to take them both over the precipice. He clutches her fast to him, however, and says, "Do you think that's the only way we'll be together?"

And so begins "Denial", starring Jason Patric and Robin Wright-Penn, a story about coming to terms with lost love. And it's a promising beginning, too. Patric is the righteous and moody Michael; Wright-Penn's character is Sara, a free-spirited yet self-absorbed girl who flits about somewhat thoughtlessly in her youth, unaware until it's too late just what kind of damage she is doing to Michael, and ultimately, herself. Lovers in their ... Read More

This is a great mob/gangster movie with a great cast. Surprisingly, it has been largely overlooked. In fact, I had never even heard of it until I saw it on IFC in 2008, 18 years after it was released!

This movie also has a lot of similarities with The Departed. I am surprised few have noted the similarities:

*The Irish Mob.
*The demented Irish Mob "Godfather," played by Ed Harris.
*The undercover cop who was affiliated with the gang, left, became an officer, went undercover, and then returned.
*The love interest with a person close to the undercover officer's friend.

This is one of my favorite period stories and the acting/actors did a superb job of bringing the characters to life in this adaptation of the classic novel. If you love this type of period story as much as I do, you will not be disappointed with this film. The plot is twisty and dramatic and the ending is grand. It is one of my all time favorites.

This movie didn't seem to get very good reviews. After seeing it myself, I'm frankly kinda stumped. It's malevolent and weird, but it certainly isn't dull; it's nightmarish and surreal, but not to the point that you can't tell what's going on. Plus, the acting is great and the concept disturbing. As unpleasant as parts of it were, I'm going to watch it again.
Part of the problem is, this movie is a remake of a much better TV series. The TV series ran 7 1/2 hours, and this movie has *somehow* been cut down to 2. Okay. You can guess what happened. In an attempt to trim off fat, they whittled the plot down to an incomplete skeleton. But it all still makes sense, and I enjoyed doing my own job of guessing and reconstruction.
I think the other problem is that people see the title, and expect a fun, flashy crime story. This movie is not ... Read More
