VHS : Big Doll House
At times, you don't know exactly how silly this is supposed to be, and the whole film has a tone of naivety in spite of its run of sex and violence (with drug addiction thrown in for good measure). The plot couldn't be more simple: a group of women in prison, led by the resourceful Collier (top-billed Judy Brown), plan an escape. Inside snitch Grear (Pam Grier in her first speaking film role) slips information back and forth to the guards and the evil warden, Ms. Dietrich (a hilarious Christiane Schmidtmer, best remembered for The Giant Spider Invasion), in order to get smack for her lesbian lover cellmate. Guards torment and molest prisoners. Prisoners get naked (though not as much as you'd expect for this genre). One evil head guard, Lucian (Kathryn Lodern, the quasi-Bette Davis villainess from ... VHS : American Short Story Collection: The Sky Is Gray
In a world of splashy 2 hour+ action-packed,over-produced Hollywood Blockbusters stands the small collection of 46 minute gems from THE AMERICAN SHORT STORY COLLECTION."The Sky is Gray" is one of a few short stories realized into teleplays for the t.v. in the 1970's.They are all amazing adaptations and star some of the finest stage and screen character actors of the time.

"The Sky is Gray" is Charles Fuller's teleplay adaptation of Ernest J. Gaines short story. The story concerns itself chiefly with one day in the life of a young boy,James, and his mother as they go into town to have James' tooth pulled. Now that may not sound terribly grabbing, but for the student of poignant lessons learned in brief time periods with minimal dialogue, you will rarely find one done so compellingly and with ... VHS : Women in Cages
In the same vein as Jack Hill's Big Doll House, Women in Cages is a searing expose of prison life. But unlike Hill's W.I.P. films, it hits all the right notes of the genre, but without much style. Nevertheless, its amateurish nature does offer up a little in the way of campy entertainment.

So Jeff is sent to prison, she must face off against head matron Pam Grier.
Unfortunately for Jeff one of the ... Read More
