VHS : The War Wagon
The War Wagon was a hit when it was first released and is still a great film today. John Wayne and Kirk Douglas have just enough tension to really wonder if they will end up shooting each other or doing the hold up. Excellent addition to any family home film library.

This movie falls into the "so bad it's good" category. All the actors are terrible, even Henry Fonda's cameo stinks. Some of the scenery is great, some is obviously phony. But somehow it is watchable, perhaps because you keep imagining what is being parodied, especially toward the end. Yet it gives one a twinge of regret when it's over.

Having read many of the worst reviews, I can fully appreciate where the kids are "coming from". They don't really get it because it was too full of the symbols of the time in which the film was shot. It is obviously not a piece of timeless art intended for future generations. It was for that time and it accomplished its goal, which was to wake up a new generation to the possibilities of life. Choices. the music was current and dynamic and added to the power. Unless you are old enough, or have submerged yourself in the period, I would not expect you to enjoy it. If Woodstock The Movie, or The Last Waltz have meaning for you, you'll probably get something from it. Otherwise, just assume that you don't get it because YOU HAD TO BE THERE. Film classes might be able to put into context for you.

It's too bad this film is not on DVD, even so, you should find a VHS and buy it. It is wonderfully funny, not in a laugh out loud way, but very subtle.

This is not the Love Goddess from Gilda anymore, but a very fine actress in her nearly last movie. She was only around 52 when she made this film in France and the french gave her a good title role, when in the USA no
director wanted to cast an "old" Rita Hayworth anymore. And this film was not made by an infamous director as have all her last terrible 3 movies, this time she was cast by Georges Lautner, to play the disturbed mother
of Mimsy Farmer. "Disturbed" she is in this movie and it gives in a tragic way already a glimpse of what happened to Hayworth a few years after this film; she got Alzheimers diease and lived in a disturbed mental
world. Watch this film not only for Rita, the story is very interesting and mysterious : A supposed lost son, Robert Walker Jr. , comes home after years ... Read More

... I'll watch any genre of horror movie, from slashers, gorefests, cheap thrills, and psychological. This had good acting, interesting story, but very predictable, stupid towns people, and uneeded nudity. They put that in, because the makers of this film new the audience would be bored. This is an okay film, but could have been alot better. I have this one on The Boogeyman/Devonsville Terror dvd. The Boogeyman is the superior. I guess when you have seen The Exorcist, all other horror films just seem tame.

Most people talk about the violence in this movie and this film does live up to its title. Although I enjoyed the action in The Savage Seven it became the "signature" movie of my teen years for other reasons.

When this movie was released I was a teenager riding a 500 cc Triumph Daytona. After seeing this film some friends and I took a trip to a small town and stayed for a few days. We did not have the same wild adventures as in The Savage Seven but it was my first non-supervised vacation. This movie will always remind me of that coming-of-age trip and the young lady that I met there.

The music in this film stayed in my memory, particularly "The Unconscious Power" and "Maria's Theme". I rode many a mile with these two songs playing in my head.

Most biker movies have their own ... Read More

THE PASSOVER PLOT
directed by Michael Campus
approximately 1 hour 45 minutes
based on the eponymous book by Hugh Schonfield

This is an interesting look at the crucifixion story in that it emphasizes the "Jewishness" of Jesus' followers. However Zalman King's portrayal of Jesus is somewhat erratic... he is either stone faced or he is screaming! Zalman is better known today for soft-core sexual movies in the Skin-o-max mold. Donald Pleasance (from the Halloween movies) does a pretty good job as Pontius Pilate though. Director Michael Campus is probably best known for the 1970s pimp movie THE MACK!

The movie takes us back to the first century and puts us right in the heart of the Jewish political underground. The more revolutionary Jews are shown as being fed up with ... Read More
