Besides having some really good skiing scenes, there's a beautiful young Robert Redford. That's always worth a second, third and fourth look for we ladies.

Just to offer my two cents, now that both versions are on DVD:

Regardless of what aspect ratio it was originally shot in, the full-screen version is indeed pan & scan. I now have both. If you compare the two, you'll see the newer widescreen DVD is not missing any of the picture from the top or bottom. It is the full-screen that is indeed missing the sides.
I never saw it in the theater, so I can't say how it was originally projected.
Either way, it's one of the best films ever (way better than Citizen Kane), so watch it however you want and enjoy.

I refused to buy this on DVD for years. If they reissue it again on full screen I will still refuse to buy it. The day they release it on wide screen then I will get a copy at once. This is one of those films that I must have in my collection, but the WHOLE THING, not just the main part in the middle.

I don't have anything to add to the excellent review by Ralph R. Echtinaw: I agree with everything he said.

I am putting up this entry simply in protest (also), that The Great Waldo Pepper has never had a descent release to video in any format. Boo, hiss!

VHS : Candidate
I do not have to tell anyone that the look behind the scenes at the fictional California senate race in the 1972 film "The Candidate" remains realistic and relevant today. The sophistication employed by candidates and their supporters in putting together campaign ads has certainly become progressively slicker and sicker, but what we see in Michael Ritchie's drama is essentially what we still get today. The tagline for "The Candidate" was: "Nothing matters more than winning. Not even what you believe in," a sentiment that is certainly true today, Election Day 2004. Both of the candidates, George W. Bush and John F. Kerry, were nominated by their parties because of the perception that they could win the election. Bush had been re-elected governor of Texas, so he had the requisite weight to going up ... Read More

Nice reproduction. It was originally filmed in great quality. Not real sure if the Blue-ray version is that much better. I viewed it on a 720p 42" LCD. But the price made it worth it.

***** 1969. Adapted from Harry Lawton's Tell Them Willie Boy is Here, this film was written and directed by Abraham Polonsky. A brand new zone 2 DVD of it is now available at Amazon.fr in a pristine copy. Texas, 1909. American Indian Willie Boy is hunted by sheriff Robert Redford in the desert. Both will lose there their last illusions. One can either enjoy this western as a powerful drama or appreciate the way Abraham Polonsky comments one of the rare American myths. A masterpiece that needs to be seen at least twice to be fully understood.

All the President's Men (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Another one of my Dad's favorite movies. He was in college during the Watergate Scandal and followed it thoroughly. I saw the movie from his collection. The EXCELLENT FILM is based on the story of two reporters for the Washington Post, Carl Bernstein(Dustin Hoffman) and Robert Woodward(Robert Redford), who stumbled across a potential lead for a story that snow-balled, to their continued horror, to the incrimination of and forced resignation of President, Richard Nixon. Fed by the mysterious "Deep Throat", Bernstein and Woodward put their own pieces together, sold two and a half million copies of the Post and won a Pulitzer Prize. The script by William Goldman and based on Bernstein's and Woodward's book, is COMPLETELY CREDIBLE as it deals with incredible events. ... Read More
