VHS : Applegates
Simply put, the Applegates are your typical nuclear family who wants nothing more than to nuke the human race. Seems simple enough for a group of cockroaches from the bowels of the Amazon forest, but, alas, nothing is simple when Ed Begley Jr, Stockard Channing, and Dabney Coleman round out a cast that discovers being human is more difficult than imagined. "The Applegates" was clever, funny, intelligent, poignant, and surprisingly shocking. From the beginning, with a group of volunteers trying to teach natives over the rumble of urban sprawl in the Amazon, to the very fun ending that makes you want to clap your hands and jump in excess, "The Applegates" represented an old style of cinema that is deeply missed in modern theaters. With a calling card that screams part "Invasion of the Body ... Read More

I'm not necessarily a fan of Shirley Temple but I love Alice Faye so I own this VHS. Alice made one other film with Shirley Temple (Poor Little Rich Girl) and I own that also. She sings 2 songs in this one: "Good Night, my Love" is the better. Very few of Alice Faye's 1930s films are available on VHS and DVD. If you don't know Alice Faye, I would recommend "Lillian Russell" or "Weekend in Havana" (both are on DVD). You can also buy CDs of her music (and wonderful voice).

What an incredible movie! My father was the first to get me hooked on this movie, and its random storyline has enthralled me ever since. More fable than true story, it still manages to be humorous, random, and heartfelt all at once. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have their usual chemistry, leading this film to be one that will stay in the heart.

4.Candy Mountain starring: Kevin J. O'Connor, Harris Yulin, Tom Waits, Bulle Ogier, Roberts Blossom

VHS : Candy Mountain
"Candy Mountain" is a fine film by the great Robert Frank
that combines a minor coming of age theme with a road trip in search
of the elusive and great hermit builder of the world's best electric
guitars. This mythic figure, one Elmore Silk, has moved to rural Cape
Breton and disappeared with his fame and guitars, leaving nothing
behind him. Kevin O'Connor plays the innocent and affectless loser
who takes to the road from NYC, moving steadily north pursuing Elmore
Silk and hoping to return to NYC with one of the lengendary guitars.
At each stop along the way he seems to lose more and more of his
material possessions but keeps moving with a determination that is
fueled by the vague hope of somehow bringing back the Holy Grail. And
cashing in.

I was surpised by how much I enjoyed this one. A sequel made in the 90's that still feels more like the 80's. There are more laughs in this one which is great because it keeps you from losing interest before all the gore starts. Poor Angela looks about 30 years older here - so I guess demons age too. Mrs. Ben Stiller/aka the movie's Marsha Brady is one of of the hornball kids in peril. Really a lot of fun. The Nun is hoot and a half! Enjoy.

I am surprised that this film (and I use that word loosely) was ever released. The writing/editing is deploreable. I tend to feel that there was much more to this film that laid on the bottom of a cutting room floor I am being kind here

VHS : Wizards of the Lost Kingdom 2
"Wizards of the Lost Kingdom 2" is one of the worst fantasy films ever made;it's down there in the lower depths with "Dungeons and Dragons",the Jeremy Irons/Thora Birch farce. I accidentally rented "Wizards of the Lost Kingdom 2" without having seen the first one. Not that I would be missing anything.

In "Wizards of the Lost Kingdom 2",a naive young shepherd boy named Tyor must retrieve and/or destroy magical objects. Tyor has a bumbling mentor who gives him heavy-handed moral lessons. At one point, the pre-pubescent Tyor has the moves put on him by a scantily clad sorceress. It's one creepy scene that'll have you saying "ick." The movie plods along. I have up out of boredom. For a fantasy epic, nothing much happens. A perfect companion to the equally dull "Quest of the Delta Knights."

David Carradine has ... Read More
