VHS : Weird Science
Two nerdy high school students inadvertently create the perfect female through an experiment. With her charm and her powers, she helps the two gain confidence in approaching women and being affirmative and outspoken with bullies, such as big brother Chet, and the post-apocalyptic road warrior from Mad Max. Hilarious and entertaining! Easily in my top 20.

2.Chaplin starring: Robert Downey Jr., Geraldine Chaplin, Paul Rhys, John Thaw, Moira Kelly

VHS : Chaplin
This review refers to the 1998 DVD edition, the only edition available as of this writing. "Chaplin" is a well-crafted, well-acted biography of the famous silent-screen actor/comedian. The transfer of this 1993 film to DVD is adequate. The format is letter-boxed widescreen (not anamorphic--there are black bars on all sides of the image on a large-screen TV. The side bars are not seen on a smaller screen TV). The picture is fairly sharp, the colors are good, sound quality is fine. The film has an old look about it, but this was probably the intended effect. This is the kind of movie you will watch more than once, so it's worth the purchase price. Highly recommended!

3.Chances Are starring: Cybill Shepherd, Robert Downey Jr., Ryan O'Neal, Mary Stuart Masterson, Christopher McDonald

VHS : Chances Are
As romanatic comedies go--this is one of the best. I don't normally care for this genre, but I'll make an exception for "Chances Are". The film is well paced and the casting is perfect--in particular for Robert Downey Jr.--you can't imagine anyone else playing his role.

I almost did not purchase the DVD, thinking the transfer to DVD would be a grainy, letter-boxed, disappointing mess--not true! The transfer to DVD of this 1989 movie is quite good--anamorphic widescreen (and enhanced for 16x9 large screen TVs--so that the picture fills the entire screen--no annoying little letterbox!) with vivid colors and good sound. Although the plot involves rather serious events (death and reincarnation), the movie is quite funny--and clean--good for the entire family. This is one you will watch ... Read More

Keeping this short..."True Believer" is a film that my husband and I watch at least twice a year, and never get tired of! It's a superb combination of murder mystery, courtroom drama, and redemption story. Clever, quick-moving, superbly acted (with a dazzling performance from James Woods at the center), and full of delicious witty surprises, like the wonderful character of "Cecil (He likes it pronounced See-Sill) Skell", the much-needed witness who can re-open an old murder case, but who resides in a mental institution, and is convinced that the Telephone Company killed President Kennedy. A wonderful movie!

VHS : Only You
Really, if RDJ wasn't in this, I wouldn't at all be interested in seeing again, in spite of the beautiful scenery. After all, there are other movies with beautiful scenery. I saw this years ago and slightly remembered it being cute and enjoyable but it didn't make a strong enough impression on me to try to own it or see it again. However, this is post-Iron Man. I really didn't have a clue who RDJ was until seeing Iron Man. Now I'm trying to find all the movies he's played in. Hence I watched Only You again. I won't say anything about the plot, enough has been said about that already (why reviewers feel they have to constantly repeat the plot is beyond me... just tell what you think about the movie). Overall the movie is cute and fun to watch, despite it's weaknesses (for me Marisa Tomei was one of them) ... Read More

VHS : Short Cuts
One of the greatest compliments you can give to any film done by Robert Altman is that they perfectly represent real life. Nothing about his films are glossed up as is the fashion of almost anything in Hollywood. Every frame and every character has this rich sense of humanity and raw realness that drips from their every move. Even when the situations are less than normal the human reactions to them are so natural that one can't help but relate. `Short Cuts' has been lauded as Altman's finest work, and even though I can't say that I have seen everything he's done I can honestly say that of what I have seen `Short Cuts' is by far the grandest. Every single frame is flawlessly constructed and leads beautifully right into the next.

That's actually in all probability the greatest compliment you can ... Read More

VHS : Predator 2
Uhhhh.....There's this one scene where the Gov't agents led by Agent Keyes (Gary Busey. Remember Mr. Joshua in Lethal Weapon?) attempt to corral the Predator in a over-sized meat locker; they're supposed to be wearing these suits that block out their heat signature (that's how Predator sees you) but they are carrying these 1 million candle-power lamps, which generate heat. Okay, one glaring inconsistency that most people wouldn't notice.

Danny Glover (Harrigan), the rogue cop (remember Murtaugh from Lethal Weapon?) is mis-cast in this strange, goofy sequel to the original (the original, being far superior to this offering). And in fact, acts like the Murtaugh from Lethal Weapon. Maybe, they should have asked Mel Gibson to play his side-kick in this one. Nahhhhhh..... wouldn't have made a difference.

VHS : Proposition (1998)
Rick Ramage has written a nice and tidy little screenplay in THE PROPOSITION. Much like his other works in STIGMATA and HAUNTED, again the Roman Catholic Church plays a significant role in the unfolding of unusual and sometimes quite comical events in the lives of the wealthy Arthur and Eleanor Barret and a certain Roger Martin and Father Michael McKinnan. These four unlikely characters mix in a pre WW2 triste that includes God,lust and murder.Throw in the mysterious housekeeper and you have a quite interesting scenario that at times plays like a daytime soap opera, at times like a French farce and at times like a murder mystery.

Ramage has well defined characters and the five principle actors, William Hurt,Madeleine Stowe,Neil Patrick Harris,Kenneth Branagh and Blythe Danner do their utmost to infuse pathos, comedy ... Read More
