VHS : Above & Beyond
Paul Tibbets-Enola Gay both names that mean part of the history. This is an absorbing subject, carefully handled about the officer who piloted and drooped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
Even I think Taylor wasn't the most appropriate actor for this role, ( I just can think in three names for that moment: Robert Donat, Fredric March and Michael Redgrave) and the film surely would have elevated to a major status.
The only default to my mind is the real nightmare derived from this action; the awful sequels that surrounded the mind and personality of Tibbets are simply absent. There was a very long introduction showing the backgrounds.
A well supporting cast accompanied him. Good point for Melvin Frank.
Two years later after this film was released, the American journalist ... Read More

If only this was on DVD, but we can't have everything. Great story and better than fair acting. When it comes out on DVD I'll be buying it again, if only for the scenery.

VHS : Where Eagles Dare
Clint Eastwood probably mowed down more of Adolf Hitler's German soldiers in Brian G. Hutton's "Where Eagles Dare" than he did western outlaws as either Sergio Leone's Man with No Name in the "Dollars" trilogy or criminals as "Dirty Harry" in his five Warner Brothers crime movies. Bestselling British author Alistair MacLean penned the splendid screenplay that he later converted into a much tamer novel about a team of elite British M.I. 6 secret agents that parachute into Germany to rescue one of the top-ranking officers with a mother lode of knowledge about the June 6th Normandy landings. This MGM blockbuster that runs 158 minutes is probably the greatest action-adventure movie with a World War II setting ever produced. We're talking wall-to-wall gunfire with more surprises and complications than most movies ... Read More

ok, now THIS one is dick & liz at their most self-indulgent. even "boom" (not yet released on dvd, alas) is a better movie, if only because it is sooooo bad. it is amazing to realize that right after this, arguably her worst performance, taylor went on to give her best in "virginia wolff". i have given this a second star because the shorts about the making of the film (included on the dvd) are pretty interesting. only for dick & liz completists.

What a classic! I remember this when I was much younger. It would come on HBO and my mom would record it, but edit out all the bad stuff. It was so great to see it in it's entirety!
Classic John Candy as Dooley and Eugene Levy as Cane. Hilarious!!! Oh and Meg Ryan was soo cute before all the lip injections! It's funny to look at people back in the day and now. 99% of them should've left themselves alone!

VHS : Man Called Peter
This is one of those movies that will warm your heart and truly make you feel good. Ernest Hemingway once said that all true stories end in death, and this is a true story. But that aside, and even though the title character, Peter Marshall, meets his death, it is not at all sad, it is the story of how a man lived and the wonder he brought into his life and the joy of all those he touched. The performances of Richard Todd and Jean Peters are riveting and powerful. I don't believe that any other actor could have portrayed this character any better. This film shows an era in Hollywood that was remarkable, and the actors relied on talent, not effects. This movie is a must see for all ages, definitely a family picture. It is an inspiration.

VHS : The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
There are already many well-written reviews for this classic B&W cold war film that stars Richard Burton as a broken-down,drunken and disillusioned field operative(read SPY).One of the best espionage pictures ever made--it holds up very well, even upon multiple viewings.Based on the John LeCarre novel of the same name;this is the film responsible for introducing me to LeCarre`s novels. As excellent as the movie is-I still reommend reading the book first!
