VHS : The Great Gatsby
Perhaps some classics cannot be made into movies. THE GREAT GATSBY, which makes anybody's list of the great American novels, may just be one. Having just seen this film again for the first time since its release, I think I need to reread the novel. The chief flaw of the movie is the casting of Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan. While she certainly can act and become hysterical at the smell of a room full of roses, it is difficult to understand the power that she holds on Gatsby. While Redford makes an adequate if not outstanding Gatsby, Sam Waterston, a very fine actor indeed, is perfectly cast as Gatsby's neighbor. Bruce Dern works as the boorish Tom Buchanan, Karen Black isn't bad as his woman on the side, and Scott Wilson as her cuckolded husband who seeks revenge is well cast.

VHS : Gospel According To Vic
A wonderful little gem of a movie. Tom Conti plays a remedial reading teacher in a catholic school; everyone (except Conti) is trying to get the Vatican to recognize the founder of the school as a saint. One day Conti faints and tests indicate he has a brain tumor; later he tumbles from the roof of a building and the tumor disappears. Soon his record player begins playing when the electric is off, red lights turn green when he approaches, and "miracle fever" hits the school and community. Conti tries to scoff it all off, declaring that the "miracles" are the everyday advancements, minute as they are, that his students make learning how to read. The movie is utterly charming and immensely entertaining in a quiet way. Conti is excellent. Very, very enjoyable.

VHS : Trilogy of Terror (1975)
Dan Curtis, brain child behind such 70's telehorror hits as "Night Stalker," "The Norliss Tapes," and "Dark Shadows," scores another success with "Trilogy of Terror." This anthology showcased Karen Black's versatility as a superb actress. She portrays four different women in three tales of terror. These women range from plain and conservative to wild and sensuous. The three tales are all based on short stories written by Richard Matheson, the best-selling author of I Am Legend, which spawned three theatrical versions; the last one starred Will Smith.

Supernatural deception is the theme in "Julie." A handsome, young college student decides to blackmail his English professor, Julie, into dating him. Naturally, there are deadly consequences. This tale has a nice downbeat ending that ... Read More

This movie is a classic for more than one reason. It has a great story presenting a moral quandary. It has two great starring actors including Johnny Cash in his first starring role. It is the first ever movie produced by an Indian tribe, the Jicarilla Apaches of New Mexico. Before casinos and cigarette concessions, the Jicarillas had money as a tribe to invest from oil, gas and uranium leases.

Bringing tears to my eyes and shame to this great movie, the VHS tape I recieved was of extremely low quality.
