VHS : Jaws - 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition
JAWS is probably the best film ever made in a century besides Citizen Kane. Otherwise, Jaws still frightens millions of people.

2.I Married a Witch starring: Fredric March, Veronica Lake, Robert Benchley, Susan Hayward, Cecil Kellaway

VHS : I Married a Witch
Cecil Kellaway makes I MARRIED A WITCH a scary film indeed, and I suspect that John Huston must have recalled Kellaway's portrayal when he undertook the role of the evil, incest-driven patriarch in Roman Polanski's CHINATOWN. Against all odds, Kellaway has kept his daughter to himself for 270 years, thanks to the Puritans who have condemned him to live, as a ghost, in the form of smoke, under a giant oak tree on the ancestral property of the Wooley family. And in turn Kellaway has cursed the Wooleys, ensuring that, in each generation, no man shall find happiness in love, all will be married to plain battleaxes.

Meanwhile Daniel (the warlock played by Kellaway) had Jennifer (his lovely daughter, played by the uniquely talented Veronica Lake) right where he wants her--he's the ... Read More

VHS : Major & The Minor
Beautiful Susan Applegate (Ginger Rogers) is tired of New York where she constantly has to compromise her morality just to get along. She decides to return home and goes to the train station to purchase a ticket. Unfortunately, the rates have gone up. Angry but not beaten, she dons a costume very much like that of a little girl and convinces an innocent bystander to buy her a half fare ticket. Off she goes, but the conductor isn't convinced she's under twelve. She escapes into a man's quarters, Major Philip Kirby's (Ray Milland), and he buys her story about being a little girl. He offers to take care of her for the rest of the trip, and does so well that he escorts her to the military academy for the weekend before she heads home. In the process, she falls for him, but he's engaged.

A delightful ... Read More

VHS : Reluctant Dragon
Buyers BEWARE: I just purchased this film and it is NOT the full Robert Benchley version as pictured (which I believe is very deceiving).

This is nothing more than the animated segment (AKA: Reluctant Dragon), not to be mistaken with the full movie version, The Reluctant Dragon (as pictured), which was a mix of both live-action and animation.

The only reason I ever enjoyed The Reluctant Dragon so much was for Benchley's magically funny tour of the original Walt Disney Studios in California where he goes to plug the idea to get the cartoon made. Not only was the Disney tour a learning experience, but Benchley overcomes several hilarious obsticles on his way to pitch his ideas to Walt. The film was golden.

Unfortunately, this video is NOT it. It is just the animated dragon ... Read More

5.Nice Girl (B&W) starring: Deanna Durbin, Franchot Tone, Walter Brennan, Robert Stack, Robert Benchley
directed by: William A. Seiter
January 28, 1997
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Nice Girl (B&W)
Deanna Durbin's first movie following America's entry into World War II was the delightful romantic comedy NICE GIRL? (1941). In the film, Deanna plays a young woman who has lots of fun when her neighbours wrongly suspect her of having a "loose" reputation.

Co-starring Robert Stack (Deanna's leading man in "First Love"), NICE GIRL? paints a sweet portrait of small-town America at a time when the effects of World War II were starting to infiltrate everyday activities. Deanna plays Jane Dana, the middle daughter of a highschool professor (Robert Benchley). Jane gets into untold strife when she drives her father's colleague Richard Calvert (Franchot Tone) back to his New York address and is forced to stay the night because of heavy rain. Of course Jane's totally innocent, but the townsfolk have other ideas ... Read More

6.The Sky's the Limit starring: Fred Astaire, Joan Leslie, Robert Benchley, Robert Ryan, Elizabeth Patterson
directed by: Edward H. Griffith
May 04, 1999
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : The Sky's the Limit
With Fred Astaire's most lauded works being readily available to the public, I've always thought it a great treat to stumble into his lesser known, harder-to-find films. THE SKY'S THE LIMIT qualifies as such, and it's a darn good movie. Here, Astaire has a more dramatic role than usual and he proves to be capable in it. Meanwhile, there's the usual excellent dancing and the showcasing of two great song standards.

Fred plays Fred Atwell, an ace pilot of the world famous Flying Tigers. After another successful mission, the Tigers are sent on a stateside promotional tour, but Fred, wanting to get away from it all for a bit, decides to skip out and have fun on his own. He ends up in a New York nightclub and meets fledgeling magazine photographer Joan Manion (Joan Leslie), whom he rapidly rubs the wrong way. Not wishing to be bombarded ... Read More

VHS : Weekend at the Waldorf
The two-dimensional uninteresting characters put me to sleep after I gave it a try. I skimmed through it, and promptly erased it - it was on Turner Classic Movies. Glad I didn't buy it. I do like movies from the 40s, otherwise.

8.It's in the Bag starring: Fred Allen, Jack Benny, William Bendix, Binnie Barnes, Robert Benchley

VHS : It's in the Bag
Fred Allen makes me laugh. He may not have that effect on some folks, but the bassett-faced, baggy-eyed, acerbic & brilliant radio writer/performer with the ironic and cynical deadpan delivery has always tickled me. Alas, he's virtually unknown but to a few today, and as his main medium was radio with doubtless few if any shows extant we only have glimpses of him in a few films and his writings. Allen was a true humorist, finding the absurdity in himself and his culture, and while his humor could be stingingly sharp, it wasn't mean-spirited. A lost art, in many ways.

I can only recall him in "The Ransom of Red Chief" episode in "O'Henry's Full House" and with Ginger Rogers as the radio couple episode in "We're Not Married" for other appearances on film. At any rate, we have "It's In the Bag" which is a riff on the old Russian tale of "The Twelve ... Read More

9.Dancing Lady starring: Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Franchot Tone, May Robson, Winnie Lightner
directed by: Robert Z. Leonard

VHS : Dancing Lady
A surprisingly good movie. Disreputable dancer becomes star. Joan Crawford seen as a dancer, not as a dark character as portrayed in her later films. Also the First film of Fred Astaire. Other future stars can be spotted, for instance Eve Arden (Palmolive lady, Grease,etc...) Ted Healy and the Stooges really have a limited role, nevertheless an enjoyable film to watch.
