This film is still not on dvd, and it should be. This movie is really a guilty preasure, in that, it is all the things a movie should not be. Historically inacurrate, and all Hollywood from the get go. But, that was the way it was until audiances became too sufficiated for bad directing. Despite all that, I love this movie, because of those reasons. The truth would only paint Tracys character much differently, and we might end up hating the hero more then the indians. There are many lines in this film that are memorable. My favorite is when Tracy says "If she gives you any trouble, stick her in the rump with a bannoet." My second favorite line was so laughable I still laugh as I'm about to write it. After the indian maccacre is over Tracy is trying on the local foot wear and in an angry ... Read More

Well, it must be a good movie, since I never forgot what I have seen when I was 11. This movie was one of the first we got to watch in Bavaria, after the war. I am a little older now, but would like to see it again, mayby in the original, why not? Johannes.

VHS : Time Of Their Lives
In the early 1940's Bud Abbot and Lou Costello produced many many 'b' films for universal. The usual pattern was that bullying Abbot and Child like Costello somehow get involved with mad scientists, gangsters and adventurers concocting wild schemes. Prat falls and chases are their stock in trade. This film however was a break from that pattern and the effect is magic.

It starts in Revolutionary New York where Lou is a struggling tinker and Bud the major Domo for a Tory land owner. This seems pretty much in their usual patter but in short order Lou is mistaken for a British spy and along with the lady of the mannor murdered and cursed.

Time passes and their ghosts, trapped by the curse, are doomed to linger on the grounds of the manor until they can prove their innocence.

VHS : Sea of Grass
The Sea Of Grass has a great cast headed by Tracy & Hepburn in their only western together. Unfortunately it's more of a drama than a western and may seem a bit slow to western fans. Also their romance is strained throughout which may seem odd to Tracy/Hepburn fans, but won't disappoint in the long-run. The plot chiefly concerns how her one-time indiscretion strains the marriage and disrupts the family, particularly the effects on their son, fathered outside the marriage by Melvyn Douglas. The best thing about the film is the terrific supporting cast, which includes Edgar Buchanan (Uncle Joe on Petticoat Junction), Phyllis Thaxter (Lois Lane on Superman), Robert Armstrong (King Kong), and a host of b-movie favorites: Charles Trowbridge, Morris Ankrum, Douglas Fowley, Whit Bissell, Charles Middleton (Ming the Merciless ... This was a gift for someone who never asks for anything. I knew just where to find it. This movie has been watched over and over since it has been received. It was an old favorite long ago and loved once again.

VHS : Denver & The Rio Grande
Pop your popcorn and settle in for a 1950's-style Matinee Western that from an acting point of view is just barely a B-movie, but railroad enthusiasts will watch this VHS over and over again.

The true stars of this flick are the old Denver & Rio Grande narrow gauge from Durango to Silverton, and the Colorado scenery. Rio Grande enthusiasts will also be totally intrigued by the rare opening footage of Rio Grande ALCO PA's in silver paint for CZ duty, and many FT and F3 covered wagons still in black paint fresh from the EMD factory erecting floors. There is even a short cab ride through Glenwood Canyon, and an interesting long shot at Dotsero.

Engines 268 and 315 are in bumble bee makeup, and while the story line is both campy and corny, the many action shots of these fine machines are truly outstanding. There are ... Read More

VHS : Baby Face (1933)
I had the priveledge to see one of the first screenings of the rediscovered un-cut version of this film a few weeks ago at Brandeis University, and I must say that the New York censor board truly did this film a disservice when it forced the producers to cut and change it. It was really great, but the most interesting part was at the end when they showed clips of the edited version to show what was changed, and it was astounding how rediculous the edits seemed in context of the meaning behind the film.

VHS : Charge of the Light Brigade
For some reason, THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE (directed in 1936 by Michael Curtiz) is always forgotten when people talk about Errol Flynn's movies. It's one of the all-time greats for Flynn, in which he plays gallant Major Vickers, an officer in the 27th Lancers, whose personal story entwines with the horrors of the Crimean War.

Major Geoffrey Vickers (Errol Flynn) is engaged to lovely Elsa Campbell (Olivia de Havilland), the daughter of one of his superiors (Donald Crisp). Unbeknowst to Geoffrey, Elsa has also fallen in love with his younger brother Perry (Patric Knowles). This stormy love triangle is set against the violent conflict in the Crimean. When the British outpost of Chukoti is stormed and all the occupants massacred by the bloodthirsty forces of Surat Khan (C. Henry Gordon), Geoffrey and Elsa narrowly escape with their lives. Geoffrey ... Read More

VHS : Son of Ali Baba
To the first reviewer on this site who thought Son of Ali Baba was the movie where Piper Laurie wiggled through the bars: The movie you are thinking of was called "The Prince Who Was a Thief" and it is a far better movie than this one. Unfortunately, it is a WB movie and still has not been released on DVD or even on VHS (legally) that I know of. If you ever can get a copy of it, this is the movie you were thinking of. It is one of my favorites.
