VHS : Harry Potter & Sorcerer's Stone
This Harry Potter movie is excellent. Actually, it was better than I expected.

Yes, the movie has cut many, many, small things from the book. But, this is inevitable. If everything from the book went into the movie, you would have a five or six hour movie.

I recommend this movie.

Brosnan's third Bond movie, The world is Not Enough, is high on action but weak on plot. Robert Carlyle is a pretty good villain but his motivations seem a bit unclear. Sophie Marceu is also very good as the main Bond girl, while Denise Richards' performance is weak and she's completely miscast. Leonard Maltin wrote that the movie makes M (Judi Dench) seem foolish, and he's right. From the earlier movies, I took her to be a bright woman, but in this one she's unbelievably stupid, considering she's the head of an intelligence agency (no pun intended).

I wish they had done some more rewrites on the script and replaced Denise Richards. It's still an enjoyable movie, but not as good as it could have been.

So Bond may be a "dinosaur" but he took a slight evolutionary step forward with Pierce Brosnan who at the time seemed born to play Bond. So it was the 90s, the coldwar had thawed out, so-called political correctness was in the air and so what's a "sexist", coldwar warrior, relic of the 1960s to do? Well, pretty much what he's always done. Because really the world hadn't changed so much that women don't no longer go for cocky, smooth talking alpha-males (no matter how p.c. things get) and governments don't use remorseless assassins to spy and kill for them. Heh, Bond's new boss, a woman (it's the 90s see) by the name of "M", calls Bond a dinosaur but she sure does need him and he's still popular with movie goers. Somethings don't change I guess and sometimes that's a good thing... A James Bond that doesn't know how ... Read More

VHS : Bert Rigby You're a Fool
Idly clicking through channels late one evening, I stumbled upon BRYAF and was alternately intrigued, enchanted and moved to laughter by the adventures and mishaps of this guy who apparently should have been born 50 years earlier. Bert is someone all of us who still like "old" music and dancing can quickly identify with. His repeated failures to succeed in his field of choice are redeemed by his lighthearted determination to keep at it, no matter what--not just to sing and dance for a living, but to be successful enough to return to his native coal-mining town in northern England with sufficient money to buy and restore the old, now-unused local theatre to its former glory.

Throughout the story I found myself holding my breath as Bert was offered all kinds of really good chances to betray the trust of his girlfriend ... Read More

I know this movie may offend some people but I thought it was really great. I saw it twice on TV and just bought the DVD. Eric Idle has become one of my favorite comedy actors - Suddenly Susan with Brooke Shields, Splitting Heirs with Rick Moranis, and Monty Python to name a few.
