I was hesitant to go for the two disk set, but it's really worth it if you love musicals, and love MGM movies. The second disk is a great addition, packed with loads of info about Arthur Freed, with commentary by Debbie Reynolds, and it even includes the original film clips of the songs in the movie. This is a great choice for a fan.

I lived in Thailand for 2 1/2 years in the 1990's. It was a very nice time indeed. I know that this is not good history for Thailand and in fact the film is banned in Thailand (but a bootleg copy can be found on every street corner) because of the poor history and light on it's great king, King Mongkut. To me as an American, I can see the brilliance of a Rogers and Hammerstein Musical and enjoy its wonderful story and entertainment, it is different for a Thai person. Still the art is there and I find it highly enjoyable. I grew up with this musical and find it beautiful. Debra Kerr and Yul Brynner round out a perfect cast with Rita Moreno as TupTim. Based on Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet and set in modern New York with rival gangs. This is a great musical! Bernstein's score is a masterpiece of vocal and instrumental arrangements! The sets are a masterpiece of colour and design! The dancing is glorious! The singing is passionate! And it has a raw yet romantic feel. The director has captured a unique and surreal world and has created what I consider the most extraordinary dramatic musical ever made!

This is a fabulous romp...the sets ! the fashions ! Lana Turner's sculpted hair ! but most of all, the refreshing innocence of it. Lana Turner is simply marvelous here, and Ricardo Montalban, looking hunk-o-rama good, is even better. Incredibly delightful is Louis Calhern's "Grandfather"...a deliciously writen and beautifully acted part. The musical selections are wonderful (they look so gorgeous dancing the samba together !) and there are many extremely amusing scenes. If you want to escape into a time when things were simple, sweet and fun, this will do it !

What a match! Grayson, the beautiful physiognomy, clothes-model, and concert-quality singer was the best of her time (see her in "Kiss Me Kate"); and Mario has a magnificent voice. It was unfortunate that Mario was too out-of-condition to play "The Student Prince". Instead, the role went to Edmund Purdom. Also, Mario was made for the musical Carousel! None sings "If I Loved You" so well. But, we are happy to have the video tapes and recordings of these perfect performances available in the market place.

I remember seeing this as a youth,and enjoyed it then as now. I got a little more excited then at Rita Moreno's strip tease then, but I was an impressionable 13! She is still a beauty, and the movie has that dry Garner approach to humor that I find refreshing with all the "in you face" stuff today. The twist at the end is great too.

Overall a highly entertaining movie. The growth and maturing of friendships which translates into individual growth. The quality of the transfer from film to video is okay. It could have been better. A good film for couples.
