VHS : Tales of Manhattan
I first saw this movie years ago on AMC - I'd never heard of it but there wasn't anything else on, so I settled in to watch. After all, with the cast of stars including Rita Hayworth, Ginger Rogers, Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton and Edward G. Robinson, I figured it couldn't be too bad. I was wrong - it was GREAT! The story involves a tailcoat which is passed from one story to the next and affects the lives of each person who receives it. Some of the stories were pure 40's fluff and that's okay - I like fluff. But two of the "tales" especially touched my heart - so much so that here I sit, years later, writing a review that I hope will inspire someone else to watch this hidden gem. You'll see other people talk about the vignette with the great Edward G. and I agree - it's absolutely one ... Read More

VHS : Salome
Salome is not a movie that sticks close to the Biblical account of the story .The script by Harry Kleiner ,based on a story concocted by Jesse Lasky Junior ,embroiders the Biblical tale and makes a great many changes,,in particular by absolving Salome of all blame for the fate of John the Baptist ,the guilt for which is laid squarely at the feet of her mother,Queen Herodias(played by the excellent-as ever-Judith Anderson). It also ignores the account given by the eminent Jewish historian ,Josephus who claims she went on to marry two members of her own family ,Philip the Tetrach and Aristobulus .Provided ,however that you are not a stickler for such things as historical accuracy ,this is a ripe and enjoyable melodrama.

Salome -the lustrous Rita Hayworth -is banished from Rome by Caesar (a cameo ... Read More

VHS : Susan & God
This is one movie that I'm not overly crazy about. I hate it when Joan's in a movie and she's not the center of attention and she's almost just there to liven things up and capture an audience. Even though the story was built around her character it seemed like she was missing in action for most of the movie (in both mind, body and spirit.) My favorite scene was towards the beginning when Susan made her grand entrance on the speed boat. This movie reminded me of "When Ladies Meet" which is another one that I'm not too crazy about. Excepts for perhaps "Strange Cargo" most of her later MGM pictures weren't nearly as good as the ones she made after or before them. The actor who played her husband in this was certainly no Clark Gable but nevertheless Joan still tries to give it her best shot.

In a nut shell, this is a fantastic Jame Cagney movie. I would have to say that this ranks right up there alongside Yankee Doodle Dandy. The acting is first rate, the music is fantastic, especially the haunting background music (WHEN YOU WERE SWEET SIXTEEN)that is played when James and Olivia meet in the park. I also love the follow along singing of "And the Band Played On" at the end of the movie. My only negative is that this movie has not been released to dvd as of yet. I also wish there was a soundtrack on cd as well. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves the simplier life and the turn of the century society.

VHS : Blood & Sand (1941)
Blood and Sand (1941) is a Technicolor film produced by 20th Century Fox, directed by Rouben Mamoulian and starring Tyrone Power, Linda Darnell, Rita Hayworth, and Alla Nazimova. It is based on the Spanish 1909 novel Blood and Sand (Sangre y arena) by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez.

There are two earlier versions of Blood and Sand; a 1922 version produced by Paramount Pictures, and starring Rudolph Valentino; and a 1916 version filmed by Blasco Ibáñez himself, with the help of Max André.

As a child Juan Gallardo (Tyrone Power) wants only to become a bullfighter like his dead father. One night he has an argument with the pompous critic Natalio Curro (Laird Cregar) about his father's lack of talent in the bullring. The argument spurs Juan to travel to Madrid and achieve his dreams of success in the bullring. ... Read More

VHS : You Were Never Lovelier (B&W)
I grew up watching all of Fred Astaire's movies & fell in love with him. I really do love all of the Astaire/Rogers movies, especially Top Hat & Shall We Dance- they are my favorites, but this movie has always been my favorite. Not only is the dancing fantastic, as always, but I love the story, Rita Hayworth is excellent, & the music of Xavier Cugat (including the role he plays), all of it combined makes this movie (in my opinion) the greatest Astaire movie. I LOVE the soundtrack!!!

VHS : Pal Joey
Pal Joey is thoroughly delightful. I'd forgotten just how much. Even though my favorite song comes from this movie, Frank Sinatra was much too old and didn't have Eddie Fisher's looks for an EF fanclub president like little old me. I certainly thought he was taller (like Michael Feinstein, big talent comes in short people); after all, he was already a star in the entertainment business and movies, not just on television. Though he was not 'bewitching,' he was a bundle of talent and versitility with lots of media attention and some gorgeous ex-wives.

To think that Hitch's blonde in "Vertigo" had music in her veins, Kim Novack was a good foil for Sinatra's antics on and off stage. But it took Rita Hayworth to put him in his place. She was the star from Knob Hill.

Watch and see how good the musicals were ... Read More

I'm sure anyone who lived in the midwestern United States in early April of 1974 can easily recall the horrific day of Wednesday, April 3, 1974, a day when 148 tornadoes swept across 13 U.S. states in the midwest and south, claiming more than 300 lives, injuring another 5,400 people, and causing massive amounts of property damage. It was the single worst outbreak of twisters ever in North America.

This VHS video program, via The History Channel and A&E Home Video, probes that "Super Outbreak" of deadly tornadoes, providing ample footage of various twisters during the rampage, plus a close look at the damage left in their wake. Program length = approximately 50 minutes.

Just imagine how much home "camcorder" footage would exist if such a huge tornado outbreak were to occur today. We'd probably have so much footage of ... Read More
