VHS : Saint of Fort Washington
I won't deny that this is a difficult film to watch especially if, like me, you have lived in New York City for any length of time (I was born here). It's the story of a homeless man named Jerry (Danny Glover) who takes under his wing a schizophrenic but basically kind, gentle and loving young man named Matthew (Matt Dillon). Jerry helps Matthew adjust to homelessness amidst a bureaucratic system that sabotages the success of anyone trying to escape it. It isn't fully clear why Matthew's mother has abandoned him - though with Matthew's history of mental illness, you get a good idea (horribly cruel as it seems). Jerry not only calls Matthew his son but also names him Saint Matthew, the Saint of Fort Washington (because of his healing touch to those in pain). I think this is an important film ... Read More

VHS : Ghost (1990)
Somewhere between good and bad lies `Ghost', a film that has enough working for it to offset the elements working against it, but in the end can't really be labeled as a `good' film or a `bad' one. I feel somewhat torn as to my response towards `Ghost' because the film is essentially two films, one of which works far greater than the other. There is a love story and a murder mystery, and the love story (which ends up taking a back seat to the murder mystery) is in all actuality the most impressive and touching part of the story. The murder mystery should have been stripped from the screenplay in my opinion, especially since it is obvious even before Sam is killed who exactly is going to have it done and why.

So, the film centers on Sam and Molly, an attractive couple who are deep ... Read More

VHS : Stephen King's The Stand
The Stand is impressive in many ways possible! I know the movie is 6 hours in length put it pulled me in after the first episode. It had a great apocalyptic opening where it can possibly happen in real life with the virus and all. The second half jumps into this supernatural realm where people dare not go and I find that fascinating. I got this movie from a 5 movie collection by Artisan (also had Cujo, Golden Years, The Langoliers, and Thinner) and I received the 2-disc version which is good but its probably better than the flipper disc. I despise flipper discs because they get scratched and broken so easily that its not funny. Lucky me I guess. This would be a great DVD title to come out on Blu-Ray. Imagine the entire 6-hour film on one disc with no flipping or changing. The Golden Years was an ... Read More

VHS : Mondo New York (NY)
A shocking documentary with rare footage. Features Real artists in their enivornments during the late 80's New York / Lower East Side Art Scene.

The main premise of a young naive girl walking the city and stumbling upon various NYC underground art theaters and hang outs is a bit silly. The film-making isn't brilliant to say the least. However, the rare footage is amazing. Features real artists like Joe Coleman and other painters, performers, and shocking theater.

Lower East Side East Village and Alphabet City Performances, Artists, Poets, Performers Stand-Up Comics, Musicians, and much more wild weird and bizarre entertainers! - The bittersweet core of the Big Apple... The New York that pulsates at night. - Mondo NY is a perversely compelling tribute to the unsung ... Read More

VHS : Mondo New York
Mondo New York is a rare documentation of New York's East Village performance art scene when it was just about to boil over into the mainstream. Many of the performers went on to become mainstream stars while others unforunately died way too young (Charlie Barnett, John Sex), shortly after the movie was produced. This film is a must-see for anyone who is interested in the New York underground art scene. It may be the only chance for one to witness the energy of a lost decade. Shortly after seeing this movie I moved to the East Village just to be a part of this vibrant, creative community. The energy of the performers is palpable. I highly recommend this film to anyone interest in either performance art or New York subcultures. Definitely a great snap shot of The City as it was in the 1980's.
