VHS : Bear Island
Bear Island is one of those movies I want to like more for all its cheesiness. Barely released theatrically, cut heavily for home video and rarely shown on TV, it marked the end of the big screen Alistair MacLean goldmine (subsequent adaptations would be straight to cable) and, pretty much, the viability of most of the cast as leading players - Donald Sutherland, Vanessa Redgrave and Richard Widmark in particular would soon be relegated to the little leagues or supporting roles. At times it's like a bad accent competition, with Richard Widmark's German and Christopher Lee's Polish faring better than Vanessa Redgrave's Norwegian ("Yuust becorzz somwun haas givan anne ohrdoor?") which at least adds a little variety to her usual flat delivery of dialog. Maybe Donald Sutherland should have tried ... Read More

VHS : Cold Sassy Tree
A flawless scrpit, award winning actors, what else is there to say. Cold Sassy is a beautiful, touching story of love and loss. One of my favorites that I can pass down generations.

VHS : The Alamo
I love this film. It's entertaining as it can be but historically it is way off the mark. The lyrics of one of song goes as follows: "...let the legend grow and grow....'bout those thirteen days of glory at the siege of Alamo..." I think this demonstrates Wayne's philosophy..."let the LEGEND grow and grow..." He had no problem with bending the facts a little to emphasize the glory that was Alamo.

I'm in total disagreement with this philosophy. I think that the actual story of Alamo is so compelling that it shouldn't be fictionalized. So what if a few men, including possibly Davie Crockett, tried to surrender at the end? Outnumbered, out of ammunition and with a bayonet at your throat, ANYONE would have surrendered. It doesn't diminish the heroism by one iota.

That fact ... Read More

VHS : The Final Option
Although an early eighties film, and the special effects are of that time period, it gives you an action packed look at an elite SAS operation. A great film for military buffs.

NIGHT AND THE CITY...RIGHT?
almost like macbeth in nature, richard widmark makes choices in his life that can ultimately lead to only one conclusion...along the way are a loyal but weary girlfriend, shady husband and wife business partners, and a professional wrestler living glory days past his prime...standing in widmark's path to riches is the underworld organization....but it's the war torn city of london at night that takes center stage in dassin's shakespearean-like tragedy, which is certainly one of the best film noir's ever made.
(want to save yourself 20-30 bucks..buy the OOP factory original 20th century fox vhs instead of the criterion dvd...the videotape is clear, complete, and captioned.)

6.Madigan starring: Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Inger Stevens, Harry Guardino, James Whitmore
directed by: Don Siegel

VHS : Madigan
Before he directed "Dirty Harry", the late Don Siegel made this gritty New York City thriller about a maverick cop(the late Richard Widmark) who along with his partner (Harry Guardino) loses their guns to a psychopathetic killer. In contrast to "Harry", "Madigan" focuses on the lives of the various people in the Police Department, the Commissioner (Henry Fonda), Madigan's troubled marriage, a corrupt veteran cop (James Whitmore), and of course the pursuit of the killer interwined with the various subplots. It plays almost like a police soap opera but a fine cast of pros (Widmark, Fonda, Whitmore) bring it to life. According to sources, Fonda was particularly displeased that the movie focused more on the maverick cop than his character, nevertheless the film proved to be a hit commercially and critically and even spawned a TV ... 8.Kiss of Death starring: Victor Mature, Brian Donlevy, Coleen Gray, Richard Widmark, Taylor Holmes
directed by: Henry Hathaway

VHS : Kiss of Death
****1/2 1947. Directed by Henry Hathaway. Richard Widmark, in his first role, earned a Golden Globe (Most promising newcomer) and an Academy award nomination, so does Eleazar Lipsky for the screenplay. Victor Mature accepts to become a snitch in order to be with his children. KISS OF DEATH is a classic film noir shot on location as often in movies produced by 20th Century Fox at that time. Classic scenes like the murder of Rizzo's mother by Widmark, the first hold-up or Richard Widmark's laugh already belong to history. Highly recommended and a valuable addition to your library.

...Nowhere, have I set eyes on a better Marine movie than this one...it has so much to offer besides the lethal war scenes...ponder this scene...the Marines leaving the safe sanctuary of those gaping LST doors in their briney wake, even the music puts your in their boots...mulling over in their minds that shortly, this is their last day on earth...[powerful cerebrate moment]...the clanky Amtraks churning up the blue/white sea while racing towards the Line of Departure...all hell is about to blast 'you' out of the water..."Lock-N-Load"...we are crossing the Line of Departure" is shouted out!!!...the US Navy's club-wielding police force is turned loose to do their sworn duty to kill every Japanese Marine on another blood/soaked and palm fringed island...another gem, Widmark telling the Colonel who now wants prisoners, that once you teach Marines to ... 10.Whale For the Killing starring: Peter Strauss, Dee Wallace, Kathryn Walker, Bruce McGill, Ken James

VHS : Whale For the Killing
Peter Strauss, normally a wonderful actor, let's his drama-queen persona move to the forefront as he cries to the dying whale to hold on and not give in. You almost wish he'd marry it and get it over with.
Over-acting aside, the movie is based on a superb book (of the same title) and STILL is a fine family movie (violent stupidity notwithstanding). I will give it 3 thumbs up.
